While the focus of football fans around the globe is currently on Russia as the World Cup continues, you could argue that this is going to be one of the most exciting summer transfer windows in recent memory. Several high profile names have jumped ship already in the last few weeks, and as we look ahead to the next few months, it seems like Arsenal could well be one of the most active teams in Europe.
Unai Emery’s men have been linked with every player under the sun, but you could argue that this rumour is the biggest of them all, with David Luiz being linked with a move across London to the Emirates. Sure, the Brazilian may not be quite as much of a superstar as he was a few years back, but it’s still a possible move that Gunners fans around the world will likely be willing to entertain.
Something that feels like it’d be a positive when it comes to a move for Luiz would be his confidence. Both on and off the ball he’s a defender who isn’t afraid to charge forward or get stuck in, and while that has cost him at times, that may be the kind of leadership and tenacity that Arsenal needs at the back. After all, it’s clear to see that fixing the defensive issues at the club is going to be Emery’s priority, and over the last few years, it’s felt like Arsenal have had a string of centre-backs and full-backs who just can’t deal with the mental strain of playing at this level.
The 31-year-old feels like someone who can motivate the dressing room when times are tough, and on top of that, just think how gratifying it’d be for the Gunners. Over the last decade or so Ashley Cole and Cesc Fabregas have been two signings that have intensified the rivalry between Arsenal and Chelsea, and while this wouldn’t completely make up for that, seeing David Luiz in a red and white shirt will drive the Blues insane.
It’s certainly a risky move but Emery doesn’t seem like someone who is going to hold back in that regard, and that’s what Arsenal desperately need. He can afford to take a few leaps of faith, because this is his first season, and we’re confident in saying that he’ll be given time to succeed at the Emirates.
