Transfer rumours: Richarlison decides against Arsenal transfer

Posted on June 14, 2022 by Veselin Trajkovic

Everton forward Richarlison has apparently decided against joining Arsenal this summer. That is according to Brazil UOL (via Sport Witness), and the main reason behind it is the possibility of Leeds United winger Raphinha moving to the Emirates. Richarlison apparently believes it would condemn him to sitting on the bench.

Meanwhile, the Brazil international continues to be linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and there’s no real need to point out that he would hardly get any game-time ahead of the likes of Harry Kane or Kai Havertz.

Having scored 10 Premier League goals in 2021/22, Richarlison played his part as the Toffees, led by Frank Lampard, managed to avoid relegation late on. Nonetheless, he has been dropping hints about being open to exploring new destinations. The report claims Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu were ready to push for a deal despite Everton asking for a lot of money for their main attacking threat, but they’ve been forced to give up due to his decision to rule out the Emirates as a possible destination.

In all frankness, it’s not easy to believe that this particular player was of much interest to Arsenal. Richarlison joined Everton from Watford back in 2018 for a reported fee exceeding £35 million, and since then, he’s gone on to score 53 goals in 152 appearances in in four years – just over 13 per season in all competitions. For a player who spends most of his time as a central attacker, has that amount of Premier League experience and is supposedly about to enter his prime, these numbers are far from great.

Quite apart from that, Richarlison is known as a controversial player, and given everything that has happened at Arsenal over the last few years, the last thing they need is another one of those. Most recently, he’s been investigated for throwing a lit flare into the stands of Goodison Park, the part containing disabled supporters, and he was involved in a training-ground bust-up with Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior while on international duty.
