Transfer rumours: Arsenal lead Alexander Isak race

Posted on January 03, 2022 by Veselin Trajkovic

The winter transfer window is officially open, and the rumours linking every club in the world with a host of players are sure to be fired at the unsuspecting public with relentless enthusiasm by the people who get paid simply to invent and write about them in a relatively convincing way.

Among the latest ones involving Arsenal comes from El Nacional, who claim the Gunners are the favourites in the race for the signature of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak.

There can be no disputing the fact that the club need to be looking into players like that – forwards, relatively young (Isak is 22), simply because a number of departures in that department are likely to happen between now and the coming summer. The situation surrounding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, following his last (to date) outburst of indiscipline, is yet to be resolved. The contracts of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah expire at the end of the season, and there’s still no report suggesting either will be signing a new one.

As for Isak, his contract with Sociedad does not expire before the summer of 2026, which means he certainly won’t come cheap. The 31-cap Sweden international rose through the ranks at AIK in his homeland and joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2017. Having had a loan spell at Willem II, he was eventually sold to Sociedad of a reported fee of €15 million in the summer of 2019. Since then, he’s gone on to score 40 and assist seven goals in 111 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish club.

Apparently, Barcelona are interested in his services as well, despite signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City and being reportedly in talks with Juventus over Alvaro Morata, but Sociedad would prefer to sell the striker to a club outside of Spain, which puts Arsenal in the pole position at the moment.
