Lucas Torreira is now very close to completing a loan move to Atletico Madrid, according to The Athletic. It has also been confirmed by Goal.com Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts. The Uruguay international will join Diego Simeone’s team for the remainder of the 2020/21 season, with Atletico having the option to make the deal permanent at the end of that period.
The deal hasn’t been agreed in every detail yet, nor has Torreira’s medical been scheduled, but the parties involved in the talks are close to reaching the agreement.
Signed in the summer of 2018 from Sampdoria, Torreira was supposed to bring balance to Arsenal’s midfield section. However, Unai Emery’s occasional decision to utilize him in a more advanced role, as opposed to his natural defensive one, seems to have derailed his continuity to an extent, and since Mikel Arteta took over, the likes of Granit Xhaka, Dani Ceballos and Mohamed Elneny have all been ahead of him in the pecking order in the middle of the park.
The main trigger for this business has been the player’s wish to secure regular game-time, and he is apparently grateful to Arsenal for taking it under consideration and working to get something done.
Arsenal have been trying to sign Atletico’s Thomas Partey throughout the summer, but it is understood that the Ghana international is not included in this deal. Atletico have maintained the position that only by triggering his €50m (£45m) release clause would Arsenal be able to take Partey away, and nothing has changed. It seems the La Liga side are currently considering allowing Hector Herrera to leave to make way for Torreira, and bringing Torreira to the Wanda Metropolitano doesn’t mean they would be giving up on the idea of keeping Partey.
As per the report, Sead Kolasinac, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Matteo Guendouzi could also leave the Emirates over the next few days, with young forward Reiss Nelson expected to go out on loan.
