It’s never a smart idea to write off players prior to them actually retiring, because let’s face it, we’ve all been proven wrong in one way or another over the years. Whether it be due to a late career resurgence or a veteran player suddenly losing his mojo, you truly never know what is waiting around the next corner. So, with that in mind, we want to try and be a little bit conservative when it comes to discussing the Nacho Monreal dilemma.
Questions, questions, questions
What dilemma, you ask? Well, first of all, he didn’t travel to Dubai because of a niggle, but that isn’t really what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about the fact that at the age of 33, he seems to be slowing down in a big way on the final stretch of the domestic season. Given the many years of service that he’s given the club you’d think we could let this slide, but let’s not forget what is at stake here.
Arsenal are in a position where they could have a phenomenal end to the campaign or a dreadful one – and one bad move or mistake could truly change the course of their entire trajectory. If you don’t believe us, then go and ask Steven Gerrard what kind of response he got from the masses when he slipped and allowed Demba Ba to score for Chelsea in that vital game a few years back.
Are we just making this up?
Monreal was a great player back in his day and he’s still pretty solid, but if there are going to be mistakes from now until the end of the season, we wouldn’t at all be surprised if they came from him. That sounds like we’re being a little bit harsh, but this is the time for Unai Emery to make the kind of decisions that let the fans know he’s got a bit of a backbone.
Nacho will probably go on to have the best spell of his entire career now that we’ve said all this, but either way, we’re a little bit nervous for the return of domestic football next week. That’s not purely because of him, of course, but it’s certainly a factor.
Do you think Nacho Monreal deserves to hold down a place in Arsenal’s starting XI, or do you think that he should be dropped for the final run in?
