The Chambers equation

There are a lot of good things happening at Arsenal right now, but there are also a handful of questions that still need to be addressed. One such question we have is this: what in the world has happened to Calum Chambers? When he was first brought into the club many fans saw it as a sign that the club was doing everything they could to fix their defensive problems. While that likely was the case it felt like he was thrust into the spotlight far too soon, and thus, his form wound up suffering as a result.

The worry

At the age of 23 you’d think that things could still be on the up for him at the Emirates, but it doesn’t feel like that’s the case at all. He signed a new long term contract recently with Unai Emery claiming that he had big plans for him, only for Chambers to be thrown out on loan with Fulham. He hasn’t been able to really find his feet with the Cottagers which could really damage his confidence, and while 23 is still pretty young, it feels like he needs to be breaking into the Arsenal first team sooner rather than later if he wants to keep his place at the club.

Unfortunately he can’t do that if he’s out on loan, but Emery probably isn’t going to be quite as interested in investing in the guy at this stage. That’s especially true now that Rob Holding has found his feet, with Chambers falling further and further down the pecking order.

The future

Perhaps there’s a silver lining in this somewhere for Chambers, but at this moment in time it certainly doesn’t look promising. There are a handful of places he could go both abroad and in the Premier League where he could re-discover the form that put him on the map in the first place, but part of the blame needs to go on the club for this one.

You can’t claim that you have big plans for someone one minute and then drop them the next, because those kinds of mixed signals are never helpful for either the fans or the player himself. Of course, there’s much more to it than that, but if we cut this story down to size then all we’re really left with is an unhappy player and an unsuccessful venture.

What’s the next step for Calum Chambers?
