Arsenal, as the FA Cup winners, are set to face Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield on Saturday, and head coach Mikel Arteta spoke to the press ahead of the match, providing some updates on the likes of Willian, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and others.

First of all, the boss was asked about Willian adapting to new surroundings. The Brazilian winger will certainly need some time to absorb all the new stuff around him, but he undoubtedly possesses the right qualities to make it as an Arsenal player and help the team going forward. The coach is obviously impressed with the attitude of the 32-year-old, who, having won a lot in his career, is still hungry for more.

Arsenal have completed and officially confirmed the signing of Willian from Chelsea on a free transfer. The winger has signed a three-year contract.

With his contract set to expire this summer, Willian was reportedly in constant negotiations with Chelsea over an extension, which intensified in the last few months as manager Frank Lampard reiterated his desire to keep hold of the player. However, Chelsea stood firm in their stance not to offer a contract longer than two years, which Willian obviously felt was unacceptable. Arsenal readily pounced and made the offer of a three-year deal which the player had been hoping for, wanting to remain in London.

Willian has reportedly passed his medical ahead of the proposed move to Arsenal.

The 32-year-old revealed his decision to leave Stamford Bridge after seven years in an open letter to the Chelsea supporters on Sunday. Apparently, despite the player not making any waves regarding the wages on offer at Chelsea, the Blues simply refused to meet his request for the duration of the proposed new contract to be set at a minimum of three years. Arsenal jumped to the chance and quickly informed the winger he would be getting a three-year deal if he agrees to move to north London.

Arsenal have reportedly been in talks to sign Willian from Chelsea on a free transfer this summer, and according to Sky Sports, they’ve now emerged as favourites to get the deal done ahead of several other interested clubs.

It seems the Brazilian winger is very keen on the idea of working with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu, and that is why his mind is now turned towards the Emirates. Nothing has been set as definite as of yet with Chelsea still to face Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 this week, but a decision is expected to be made soon afterwards, given that the Blues practically have no chance of going through in the competition, having lost the first leg at Stamford Bridge by 0-3.

Arsenal have long been a name on the list of clubs potentially interested in signing Willian, should the 32-year-old winger leave Chelsea as a free agent this summer.

For his part, Willian has been trying find common ground over an extension with his current club, and though wages he would be earning aren’t any kind of an obstacle for him to put his name on the dotted line, Chelsea aren’t willing to meet his demands over the length of the proposed new contract. The player obviously wants long-term security as he angles for a three-year deal, while the Blues are well-known for having reservations about signing players over 30 on long-lasting contracts. The difference in their respective aims could see them lose a player who helped them win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and League Cup apiece, as well as the Europa League last year.

David Luiz is keen on staying at Arsenal past the expiration of his current contract this month, according to agent Kia Joorabchian (via Sky Sports).

When the Gunners signed the Brazilian defender from Chelsea last year, it was widely reported that the contract he signed was a two-year one, but it has recently emerged that it was not so. It was only for 12 months. Arsenal had the option to extend the deal for another year, but they’ve let that option expire.
