We’ve been waiting a while for a few major signings at the Emirates, and now, it’s finally come to fruition. As reported by BBC, Arsenal have been able to secure the signings of both William Saliba and Dani Ceballos. Saliba has joined for a fee of around £27 million and will be loaned back out to Saint-Etienne for the upcoming season, whereas Dani Ceballos will be arriving on loan from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The transfer of William Saliba to Arsenal is “on track”, Saint-Etienne supervisory board president Bernard Caiazzo has told Le Progres.
It appears that the Gunners have beaten a late attempt by Tottenham Hotspur at snatching the deal, even though Spurs reportedly offered more money. Saliba’s wish to come to the Emirates instead eventually prevailed.
This is the first time that an official source has been quoted on the matter, though links between Arsenal and the 18-year-old defender have been reported a number of times before. A few days ago, a report by Sky Sports said that the deal was close, but that the Ligue 1 side had been waiting for a bid from Spurs before making a final decision. They followed that up with the news that the deal had been agreed.
As reported by Sky Sports, Arsenal are close to agreeing a deal with Real Madrid to sign Dani Ceballos on loan.
Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in taking the young midfielder to north London on a permanent basis, but apparently, a temporary move to Arsenal suits both Real and the player better. Los Blancos are keen on keeping the prospect of Ceballos playing for them again in the future alive following his excellent displays at the U-21 European Championship this year, while Ceballos feels he would have more first-team opportunities at the Emirates than at Spurs, and he also feels he may yet have a future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Having seen their initial offer of £15 million rejected, Arsenal have made a second, a significantly improved one – £25 million, for Kieran Tierney, according to Sky Sports.
The 22-year-old Celtic fullback has been one of the targets the club seem to be aiming for most persistently for this summer’s transfer window, and rightly so, given the defensive woes that were plaguing Unai Emery’s team throughout last season.
Meanwhile, Tierney had problems of his own. His contribution to the Scottish champions was limited to just 21 league appearances due to a hernia problem. He has recently had surgery, and he is in the process of recovery at the moment. The report quotes Celtic boss Neil Lennon in revealing that the player still has the osteitis pubis problem, calling it “a slow burner, that one”.
Arsenal are set to complete the signing of William Saliba from Saint-Etienne, according to David Ornstein of the BBC, arguably the most reliable journalist when in comes to the Gunners.
The fee that will see the 18-year-old centre-back become an Arsenal player is set at €30 million (around £27 million) which the club will be paying in installments. In that way they will ensure that the transfer doesn’t bear much influence on their budget for this summer’s window of around £45 million.
The summer transfer window is well and truly underway, and clubs and players around the world are looking to make smart moves for themselves in the market.
Arsenal are no exception. With no Champions League football to offer and a reportedly tight budget, they really need their wits about them. So what’s going on with all those reported targets? Well, there’s isn’t really a way for anyone looking from the outside to know, but the media, as is their wont, are talking. Let’s see what they’re saying.
The rumour mill is, as we’ve talked about a million times now, in full flow – and that’s hardly surprising to hear. The nature of football ensures that transfer rumours are going to be ongoing for as long as the game itself exists, and there’s just no way of getting around that. As fans we can only go off of what we’re told, but in a lot of instances, you just don’t know whether or not to believe the rumours.
Arsenal seem to be actively looking for additions to their fragile back line, which conceded 51 goals in the 2018/19 Premier League season.
However, while it seems that an experienced, defensive leader of top quality is what the team needs, they are reportedly interested in the 18-year-old William Saliba from Saint-Etienne, according to Goal.com. Not only that, but the report names the youngster as the club’s “main defensive target”.
