Posted on October 09, 2019 by Veselin Trajkovic

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has opened up on the way the club lost the services of Serge Gnabry, who has gone on to shine for Bayern Munich.

Gnabry made his professional debut for Arsenal at the age of 17, back in 2012 when he entered a League Cup clash against Coventry City in the 72nd minute in the place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and he went on to play a total of 18 games for the club before leaving on loan to West Bromwich Albion in 2015. The temporary move was cancelled and he returned to the Emirates the following winter due to not getting enough game-time with the Baggies. Wenger says he tried to “rebuild” him following that “very bad experience” which had destroyed his confidence.

It seems that Arsenal may well have made a big mistake in the transfer market last summer. The Gunners decided to allow young German attacking midfielder Serge Gnabry to join Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

While his club are near the bottom of the German top-flight table, Gnabry has been doing more than most to drag them up the league. In fact, on Friday night he scored a brace to help Werder record a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.

Per Mertesacker’s future has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few days as Arsenal captain nears full fitness.

The German defender suffered a serious knee injury during the pre-season and is yet to make a single appearance for the North London club this season. The towering centre-back has returned to training but is still some way off from being ready to make a return to the first-team at Arsenal.

As the club captain continues his recovery, plenty of questions have been raised over his place in the team, with suggestions emerging that the Germany international could be on his way out of the club.

Arsenal have been famous for developing young players in the last two decades under French boss Arsene Wenger. However, there are some youngsters that have had to leave the club to prove their worth elsewhere.

A youngster who left Arsenal just last summer has been impressing in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen. That youngster is Serge Gnabry. The 21-year-old left the Gunners for a fee of just £6million in the summer.

He has since gone on to score seven goals in 15 appearances for Werder and scoring a hat-trick on his international debut for Germany in an 8-0 drubbing of San Marino

Werder Bremen in bid for Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker 0

According to IBTimes, Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is a target for German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, his former club. The long-serving central defender has played second fiddle to Laurent Koscielny and new-boy Shkodran Mustafi in the Gunners backline this season and is out of contract in the summer.

With Arsenal not rushing to tie the 32-year-old down to a new deal, Mertesacker may well make his exit in one of the next two transfer windows. Currently sidelined with a knee injury that will keep him out of action until December, Mertesacker hasn’t made an appearance for Arsenal this season and his future looks elsewhere next summer.

Pushed down the pecking order

The 32-year-old former Germany international has been pushed down the pecking order at Arsenal by the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi. In fact, the giant centre-back is probably now regarded as the Gunners fourth choice centre-back.

Arsenal have endured a difficult last few months of the campaign, falling behind in the Premier league title race and exiting both the FA Cup and Champions League.

For much of the campaign Mesut Ozil has been the Gunners standout performer, even when the team have struggled he has contributed something to the Arsenal cause.

Ozil exit rumours doing the rounds

As one of my colleagues revealed earlier, Ozil has been heavily linked with a return to La Liga with Barcelona reportedly interested in signing the Germany international this summer.
