Arsenal’s decision to part ways with Arsene Wenger and his support staff cost Arsenal a further £17.1 million, Martyn Ziegler, chief sports reporter for The Times, has reported.

Due to the team’s achievements stagnating at the level below expectations over the last couple of years of his reign, the club cut their contract with Wenger, set to last for another year, short last summer. With him went goalkeeping coach Jens Lehmann and Boro Primorac, a part of the coaching staff for over two decades. The club’s accounts reveal that they were all paid in full, to cover the periods remaining on their respective contracts. The largest part of the amount in question, £16.8 million, covered the wages. However, as the report claims, Arsenal’s spending on wages has increased by some 12% despite the said departures, and it now amounts to £223.3 million.

According to the Times, Italian club Internazionale are in pole position to sign Bordeaux’s Brazilian starlet Malcom. Inter have reportedly offered an initial fee of around £8.8million to sign the youngster on loan before the deal becomes permanent next summer for a fee of £26.5million.

Malcom had reportedly previously been a transfer target for Arsenal. However, that was during Arsene Wenger’s reign as Gunners boss.
