Verdict: France win

Best odds:29/20

On Saturday afternoon, France and Argentina clash in the first knockout game of World Cup 2018. The two teams produced highly contrasting displays in the group stages, but will both see the quarter-finals as a realistic aim.

France made it through to the knockout stages with very little fuss, beating Australia and Peru, while drawing with Denmark in their final group game. However, there is a sense that Didier Deschamps team are still performing within themselves in Russia.

Arsenal suffered a late 2-1 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from substitute Marouane Fellaini.

United offered the first threat on goal on four minutes, as midfielder Paul Pogba fired an effort wide of goal. Arsenal saw their first effort on goal was a long-range low effort from youngster Reiss Nelson, which David De Gea saved comfortably.

The home side took the lead soon afterwards. Pogba started the move by playing the ball to Romelu Lukaku in the area. Alexis Sanchez headed the Belgian striker’s far post cross towards goal, only for Hector Bellerin to deflect the effort on to the post. However, Pogba followed up to volley past David Ospina in the Gunners goal.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho could make a summer move for Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

The Wales midfielder will have just 12 months left on his contract this summer. The Gunners hierarchy are reportedly looking to avoid another contract wrangle resulting in losing a player for less than his actual value, like the Alexis Sanchez situation in January.

Ramsey likely to want a wage rise

The clubs reluctance to get into another Sanchez situation could lead to selling the star in the summer, rather than losing him for absolutely nothing the following summer.

Wenger will not be spending big this summer 1

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stated his club will not be spending big this summer in an attempt to catch-up to champions Chelsea. The Frenchman is famous for his budget-first approach to management, but had spent big in recent summers on big name players.

However, despite the seemingly slight change in Wenger’s approach over spending in recent transfer windows, it looks unlikely that a big name player will arrive at the Emirates this summer.

He was asked about the likes of Paul Pogba and Gareth Bale potentially moving on this summer and he told Sky Sports: “We would not get involved at that level for financial reasons,”

According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal is set to miss out on signing PSG’s highly-rated young midfielder Kingsley Coman, after reports from France claimed that the youngster had agreed to join Italian champions Juventus.

Reportedly Coman was offered a big money contract to stay in Paris and forge a career at PSG. However, the club from the French capital have a number of big players blocking Coman’s path to the first team.

He is now reported to have agreed a five-year-old deal with Juve and is likely to continue his development in Serie A rather than the Ligue One or the Premier League.
