Aubameyang joint-winner of the Premier League Golden Boot 0

Posted on May 13, 2019 by David Nugent

On Sunday afternoon, Arsenal defeated Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor in the Premier League. In the end, the result did not matter, as the Gunners still finished fifth-place in the table, a point behind north London rivals Tottenham.

However, one fact that did matter in the clash in Lancashire was that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a brace. The double saw the former Dortmund star finished as the joint-top scorer in the Premier League this season with Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on 22 league goals for the season. It is a great honour to win the Golden Boot, but it will come as little surprise to Arsenal fans.

The international break gives us a chance to reflect on what has happened so far this season at Arsenal. The Gunners are enjoying a promising campaign and at the heart of that campaign has been the goals of Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The former Dortmund striker has been a prolific scorer of goals since his days playing for Saint-Etienne in Ligue One. Since then he has been prolific for both Dortmund and Arsenal.

When Liverpool visits Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, we are all expecting a goal-scoring extravaganza. This is an idea is influenced by the fact that Arsenal and Liverpool are two of the best attacking teams in the Premier League.

That Arsenal have not exactly been great at the back this season also points to the fact that the Gunners may concede on home soil against the Reds. Liverpool have also scored at least three goals in their last five meetings with the team from north London.

Verdict: Russia win

Best Odds: 11/10

Bookmakers: Bet365

On Tuesday night, World Cup hosts Russia face Egypt in the Krestovsky Stadium. This clash could be pivotal in who qualifies for the knockout stages of the competition from Group D. A defeat for Egypt is likely to lead to the Pharaoh’s exit from World Cup 2018.

Russia

Russia made a dream start to World Cup 2018 on home soil by recording a sensational 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in their opening game. The win was much needed as it ended a seven-game run without a victory for Stanislav Cherchesov’s team.

Prediction: Egypt vs Uruguay 0

Prediction: Both teams to score

Best odds: 5/4

Bookmakers: Paddy Power and Ladbrokes

It’s a tough start for Egypt as they face Uruguay in their first game of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but it shouldn’t be too easy for the South-Americans either. It should be an interesting goalscorer contest between two players that earned high praise in a Liverpool shirt – Mohamed Salah and Luis Suarez. Of course, Suarez has been playing for Barcelona since his move to Catalonia in 2014.

Egypt

The Pharaohs didn’t show particularly great levels of form recently, winning none and losing three of their last five games.

On Friday night, Arsenal and Liverpool drew 3-3 at the Emirates Stadium in a highly entertaining affair.

Arsenal had the first effort on goal after five minutes. Alexis Sanchez’s effort looped into the air before midfielder Granit Xhaka fired wide of goal. The visitors produced their first real threat on the home goal on 12 minutes, as Sadio Mane’s effort deflects off Roberto Firmino and goes straight into Petr Cech’s arms.

Liverpool experienced an injury blow on 13 minutes when midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a knock and had to be replaced by James Milner. Mohamed Salah fired an effort off target soon afterwards.

On Sunday, Arsenal suffered a miserable trip to the north west, as they suffered a 4-0 defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League.

Liverpool offered the first real threat on goal after six minutes. Alberto Moreno’s left wing cross was headed wide of Petr Cech’s left-hand post. At the other end of the pitch, Danny Welbeck fought off Joe Gomez in the area before firing well over the bar as he lost his balance.

Cech produced a superb save on ten minutes. Emre Can rolled a cross to the far post to Mohamed Salah, who looked set to score, only for Cech to save. The Gunners defence then cleared their lines.

Will Arsenal’s title bid suffer for lack of January signings? 4

Posted on January 24, 2014 by David Nugent

According to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, the Gunners are very unlikely to bring in any fresh faces in January. This will come as a massive disappointment to Arsenal fans hoping to see the club strengthening the squad, especially in attack.

Confirmation

Asked if the Gunners were going to sign anybody in January Wenger told Sky Sports: “It looks very unlikely,”

“It is 23 January today and at the moment I must say we are not close to doing anything. I feel a bit guilty always going to a press conference during the transfer market and having nobody to announce (as a signing) but I don’t want to lie”
