Arsenal are guaranteed to sign a defender when the January transfer window opens, and supporters feel there should be no expense spared if the club are serious about their seasonal objectives to challenge for major honours.

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels could be an ideal addition if Arsenal can pull out all the stops to sign him. The German international, 25, has been enduring a disappointing campaign with Dortmund this season. Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently bottom of the table, losing eight of their 13 games played.

Arsenal hosts German giants Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night in the Champions League. The Gunners only need a draw to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the 15th consecutive season.

A draw in north London will mean that the German side win the group and Arsenal finish as runners-up. The Gunners would need to defeat Dortmund and hope the visitors lose against Anderlecht in their last fixture to win group D.

Arsene Wenger side have not won in their last three games in all competitions, and have suffered 2-1 defeats against Swansea and Manchester United, while also drawing 3-3 with Anderlecht in this competition.

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal could be set to raid Spanish La Liga side Athletic Bilbao for highly-rated young centre-back Aymeric Laporte. The 20-year-old has a growing reputation and is the sort of player that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger loved to develop in the past.


Laporte is highly-rated and it was thought that in time the youngster may move on to Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid and had in fact been linked with the former in the summer.

However with interest also growing from elsewhere he could move away from La Liga, with reports suggesting that Laporte is one of Arsene Wenger’s main transfer targets in January.

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are favourites to sign Dortmund and Germany star Mats Hummels. The Germany international has been linked with a move away from the German club for a while now, with both Arsenal and Manchester United believed to be interested in signing him.


Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is looking for a new centre-back to strengthen his defence. However, reports from Russia claim that the veteran Dutch boss has turned his attention to signing Zenit St Petersburg star Ezequiel Garay in January.

That means that Arsenal have now emerged as favourites to the highly-rated Mats Hummels when the transfer window re-opens.

According to the Daily Express, Arsenal is set to launch a £32million bid for German international centre-back Mats Hummels of Dortmund. The Gunners lack of defensive cover has been well-documented and it seems that they could view Hummels as a potential January solution.


Arsene Wenger’s side is facing a defensive crisis ahead of their visit to Hull on Saturday, a game which they are odds of 4/11 to win. Mathieu Debuchy is injured, Calum Chambers is suspended and French centre-back Laurent Koscielny is doubtful with an Achilles injury.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has stated that he is looking forward to the all-important Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.

Having picked up maximum points from first two group games, the Gunners can make a giant step towards the knockout stages with three points from tomorrow’s match.

However, even with his side in excellent form at the moment, Mesut Ozil is adamant Arsenal cannot afford not to take the game very seriously.

“We have a good starting position, but the job is not done yet,” the Germany international told Kicker magazine.
