West Ham 1-0 Arsenal: Observations 1

Posted on January 12, 2019 by Veselin Trajkovic

Arsenal suffered their fifth league defeat of the season at the London Stadium on Saturday, as West Ham managed to edge them out and take all the points. Despite the opposition not being among the ‘top six’ sides, there’s no real shame in losing an away game to a well-drilled, experienced team with a Premier League winner as their manager.

However, there certainly are things to be closely looked at and taken as lessons from this game. To put it simply, Unai Emery got outsmarted by Manuel Pellegrini this time. How? Let’s take a look.

On Saturday afternoon, Arsenal host West Ham at the Emirates Stadium, as the Gunners look to pick up their first league win of the campaign.

Unai Emery’s side will be looking to kick-start their Premier League campaign back on track after losing their opening games against Manchester City and Chelsea respectively. In fact, the Gunners have lost three of their last four Premier League outings.

Despite those negatives, Arsenal’s recent home record in the Premier League is still strong, as the City defeat ended a five-game winning run on home soil. A key to that recent good run of form has been the Gunners firepower, as Arsenal have now scored at least two goals in seven of the last nine games.

According to Sky Sports, West Ham are interested in signing Arsenal’s Spanish striker Lucas Perez before Thursday transfer deadline. The 29-year-old could well seal a move away from north London in the next few days, especially as the player’s agent has confirmed interest from the Hammers.

Surplus to requirements at Arsenal

Lucas Perez is reportedly considered surplus to requirements at Arsenal. The forward spent last season on loan at Deportivo La Coruna, where he scored eight times in 35 appearances as Deportivo suffered relegation under Clarence Seedorf.

Arsenal midfield playmaker Jack Wilshere is a summer transfer target for West Ham, according to the Daily Star. Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is believed to be a big fan of Wilshere from his previous spell in the Premier League in charge of Manchester City.

Wilshere’s contract with the Gunners expires at the end of the month and the two parties are yet to agree on an extension. If an agreement is not reached, the midfielder could leave the Irons as a free agent, which means the north London club will receive no fee for the midfielder.

Manuel Pellegrini being considered as Arsene Wenger’s replacement 1

According to Metro, former Manchester City manager and current Hebei China Fortune boss Manuel Pellegrini is on the shortlist to replace Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger when he finally leaves the club.

The Gunners continue to fall down the ranks this season both domestically and in Europe, having lost four consecutive games since 2002. Many fans are wondering just how low things can go throughout the remainder of the campaign, as the calls for Wenger to walk away or be sacked grow stronger and stronger.

Gunners set for January Isco move 1

According to Sport in Spain and the Daily Mirror, Arsenal could do battle with Premier League rivals for Real Madrid playmaker Isco in January. The youngster was bright last season when he was playing regularly, but he is not considered a regular first teamer for Los Blancos.

Despite not being able to command a regular starting spot in the Spanish capital, Isco is regarded as one of the best young attacking midfielders in the game. At times he played a deeper role for Los Blancos last season, but is more effective going forward than defending.

Jack Wilshere staying at Arsenal 0

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has denied the rumours that he is set for a summer switch to Manchester City and stated that he is happy in north London. The speculation over a move to City seems to have been circulating since the January transfer window.

Manchester City have been linked with a big money move for Wilshere, as the Citizens need to sign English players to meet the home-grown quota for next season. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have lost English players Micah Richards, James Milner and Frank Lampard this summer and are now short of the home-grown quota.

Arsenal and France defender Bacary Sagna could return for the clash against Manchester City, manager Arsene Wenger has said.

‘The final check was made today, but everybody felt alright. We have some doubts. The main doubt we have was about Sagna, who had have a test. I will make the decision about whether I take him with us, but I am optimistic.’

Sagna, 30, suffered a hamstring injury against Cardiff City at the end of November, but is reportedly back on the recovery path so he could well make the squad to face free-scoring Manchester City.

Will Arsenal succumb to defeat in Manchester again? 0

Arsenal’s next Premier League opponents are free-scoring Manchester City at the Etihad, and considering the Citizens’ 100% home record, many feel the Gunners could slip up next weekend.

Wenger’s men lost 1-0 to Manchester United upon their last trip to Manchester, and will be hoping a similar fate isn’t repeated when they travel to face United’s fierce rivals.

City have scored seven more goals than any other league side this season (41), while their home form is impressive with just two goals conceded. Manager Manuel Pellegrini has his men firing on all cylinders this campaign.
