Nacho Monreal Arsenal’s unsung hero 1

Posted on October 26, 2017 by David Nugent

It took a while for Spanish international defender Nacho Monreal to nail down a first-team spot at Arsenal. He had to job share at left-back with Kieran Gibbs for a relatively long period.

However, Monreal is now one of the Gunners unsung heroes. The Spaniard may have made an error against Everton in the 5-2 win at Goodison Park in the Gunners last Premier League game, but apart from that mistake, he has barely put a foot wrong this season for a player playing out of position.

With the new Premier League season just a few weeks away, the Spaniard has recently given an update on his injury.

Arsenal will once again have to shop for a central midfielder this summer as this area has been a major concern for Arsenal this season.

With peripheral Francis Coquelin, Granit Xhaka as a liability, long-forgotten Mohamed Elneny and Santi Cazorla sidelined with injuries since October, Arsene Wenger has been disturbingly out of option in central midfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stepped out of his comfort zone to fill in a central role in a number of times this season which only outlined the need for fresh blood in the centre of the pitch.

Arsenal does have a lot of midfield talent, but even so the Gunners are likely to miss the influential little Spaniard. There is certainly not a like for like replacement for the playmaker in the Gunners squad.

According to various media outfits from both England and Spain, Arsenal have agreed personal terms with the player, but are yet to agree a fee with Málaga.

The 27-year-old has told Málaga of his intention to depart and he has also spoken to Arsenal to tell them he is keen on joining them.

It seems that Nicklas “Underpants” Bendtner has made enough headlines at the European Championships to interest many teams in taking him off Arsenal’s hands next season, which can only be good news for Arsene Wenger’s transfer kitty!

After six months in the wilderness of Sunderland he finally decided to knuckle down towards the end of the season and has now firmly put himself in the shop window with some eye-catching performances at the Euros (not to mention the underpants saga!) and his agent seems very confident that he will be finding a new club very soon.
