Lyon beat Arsenal to win Emirates Cup 0

Posted on July 28, 2019 by Harry Kettle

The Emirates Cup is a tournament that was seemingly designed for Arsenal, and when we say seemingly, we mean it literally was. The club have had different volumes of success in the Emirates Cup, winning some years and losing in others. Today, though, their good work that has been done so far in pre-season kind of fell apart as they lost 2-1 to Lyon who captured the Emirates Cup title.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was able to give the Gunners a first half lead, and it looked like they may be able to hold onto it as we went into the second half. However, as two second half goals in the span of nine minutes from Moussa Dembele, it became evident that the tide had turned.

Arsenal will once again take part in the annual Emirates Cup game tomorrow, and this time around, they’ll be going head to head with French side Lyon. While a lot of clubs tend to mock Arsenal for having a tournament (or singular game) that is essentially designed purely for them, it always seems to be an entertaining game, and given that this is the 10th incarnation of it, they must be doing something right.

According to the Daily Mail, Ligue One outfits Lyon and PSG are eying moves for former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. Both are reportedly consisting appointing the veteran French boss as their general manager, which would be similar to the role he had at Arsenal.

Wenger has been out of work since last summer

The Frenchman’s last role in football was of course at Arsenal, which ended last summer. He had been linked with a number of roles since his exit from the Gunners, including Everton last summer and Fulham mid-season.

According to the Express, Arsenal are the favourites to sign Lyon’s promising young French midfielder Houssem Aouar. The youngster is regarded as one of the brightest young stars in the European game.

The Gunners have made a promising start to life under Spanish boss Unai Emery. However, the former Valencia boss s reportedly looking to strengthen his squad in the winter transfer window and Aouar is reported to be his prime target.

Could spend money in January after a low spending summer

Emery spent a relatively small amount of money in the summer, as the club looked to strengthen their squad with bargains. According to the Express, though, Arsenal hierarchy are prepared to back the Spaniard in the transfer market in January.

Arsenal hot on the heels of Lyon star 0

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have made Lyon attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir their number one transfer target for the summer. The newspaper claims that the Gunners are looking to conclude a deal worth £45million before this summer’s World Cup.

The French club understandably do not want to sell their star forward. However, it seems the right offer could well persuade OL to sell Fekir in the summer.

It’s not an old piece of news but the transfer rumour mill has once again picked up on a lead that Lyon star Nabil Fekir could be on his way to London.

Arsene Wenger is said to be back in the race to sign the 24-year-old versatile attacking midfielder who can fill in various roles up in the final third.

Fekir has made a scintillating start to the new season in France with Lyon and already has 12 goals on his tally in merely 15 games. Having emerged as one of the most lethal players in the French top flight, Fekir has turned plenty of heads, including Arsene Wenger’s.

14/1 for Lacazette to win the Golden Boot after double against the Baggies 0

Alexandre Lacazette arrived at Arsenal in the summer as a goal-machine from his time with Lyon in Ligue One. On Monday night, the French striker scored a brace in the Gunners 2-0 victory over West Brom at the Emirates Stadium.

The double means that Lacazette has now scored four Premier League goals in his six top-flight appearances this season, one of which was a cameo appearance off the bench at Liverpool.

Proving doubters wrong

The French international has certainly continued where he left in his native league this season. There were question marks over whether he could be prolific in a higher standard of league. However, those doubts seem to be unfounded at the moment.

Alexandre Lacazette could be a Golden Boot contender 0

I have to admit that I have had my reservations about Arsenal signing French striker Alexandre Lacazette. However, having taken a closer look at his goalscoring statistics from his Lyon career it is hard to not get excited by his signing.

The Frenchman has scored 129 times and produced 43 assists in his 275 appearances for OL, which is definitely a decent record even if he has been playing in Ligue One.

At 26 years-old Lacazette should be entering the peak years of his football career. He has many years left to bang goals in for the Gunners. Strikers generally peak in their mid to late twenties and enjoy their best years in front of goal.

Arsenal finally sign Lacazette 0

Arsenal have completed the signing of Olympique Lyonnais striker Alexandre Lacazette for a fee believed to be around £46m. The French international is a club-record acquisition and will bolster the strike force ahead of the new season. Lacazette has been a transfer target of Arsenal’s for many years and the Gunners have finally procured his signature.

“We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher. As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season,” said manager Arsene Wenger to the club’s official website.

Will signing Lacazette mean the end of Giroud at Arsenal? 1

It seems that Arsenal are in fact close to the signing of Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, as the French clubs president Jean-Michel Aulas has told French media outlet Le Progres : “Alexandre Lacazette’s transfer to Arsenal could be actioned within the next day or two.

“The figure reported by the English media of around €67m (including €12m in add-ons) is impossible and not realistic. Arsenal’s first offer was around €45m, the transfer will be concluded in the range of €45m to €50m.”
