Arsenal cannot beat Liverpool unless they make the right midfield choices 1

Posted on December 21, 2017 by Ben Darvill

In the last Premier League meeting between Arsenal and Liverpool, there was a gulf in class of epic proportions between the old rivals. Liverpool’s 4-0 win displayed just how good the Reds can be going forward, while it once again revealed that Arsenal’s defence was simply not good enough.

Arsenal’s back-three were exposed as they put in one of the worst defensive performances the fans will have likely seen from their team. Time and time again, the three centre-halves were beaten in the air, the wing-backs were caught dreaming of going forward, while the team’s possession play was about as un-Arsenal as many have ever seen it.

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere still looks someway short of match fitness for England 0

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere played 55 minutes for England in their 0-0 draw with Slovakia on Monday night but struggled to make an impact. His lack of match fitness appeared evident almost from the off as he mis-controlled on a number of occasions and miscued with a lot of his passes.

The 24-year-old is a favourite of England manager Roy Hodgson, but so far hasn’t vindicated the faith shown in him with his performances. Against Slovakia, Wilshere didn’t have a shot, created no chances, completed the fewest amount of passes compared to his midfield partners, while making just one tackle.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed midfielder Jack Wilshere will be set to make the squad for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Sunderland. The English international has been out all season with a tibia injury, but has responded well following a host of appearances for the U21s, and may be drafted into the side after the Gunners face West Brom on Thursday.
