According to reports from the German press, Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is set to retire from international duty with Germany following a disastrous World Cup in Russia.

Went go into the tournament in a negative frame of mind

Ozil and Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan met the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the World Cup, as both have Turkish heritage. This meeting did not go down well with anybody in Germany.

In fact, some fans and observers claimed that the pair should be omitted from the squad for the World Cup, as they believed that the visit showed the players lacked commitment to Die Mannschaft’s cause.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan has criticised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over his move to Premier League rivals Arsenal, with the Gabon striker reportedly handing in a transfer request to Borussia Dortmund before his £56 million switch to London.

Arsenal were able to return to winning ways last weekend as the London side dismantled Everton in a 5-1 win. Aaron Ramsey bagged a hat-trick, while Laurent Koscielny and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also got on the scoresheet for the day.

On Sunday afternoon Arsenal face a crucial game in the race for the Champions League spots, as they host third-place Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners do not exactly head into this clash in great spirits, having suffered defeat in six of their last nine games in all competitions. Their poor run of form has seen them slip to sixth place in the English top-flight table.

The Gunners could even find themselves seventh by the time this game kicks off, as Everton would leapfrog the home side with a draw at arch-rivals Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime.

In the past few transfer windows Arsenal have been linked with hundreds, maybe even thousands of different players, some realistic targets and some not so realistic targets.

However, some of the prominent players linked with moves to the Gunners in recent windows, like Grzegorz Krychowiak, Nolito and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have moved or are about to move clubs this summer.

Two reported-Arsenal targets will play in England next season

Arsenal have been linked with Spanish international forward Nolito off-and-on for the last few transfer windows, but the former-Celta Vigo striker has got his move to the Premier League with Manchester City.

Real Madrid and Germany defensive midfielder Sami Khedira is set to have a medical at Italian giants Juventus later today, according to the Daily Star. The former-Stuttgart player has previously been touted as a possible transfer target for Arsenal.

If the reports are correct then the midfielder is currently in Turn discussing terms on a four-year-deal with the Italian champions.

Khedira has struggled with injuries throughout his career at Real Madrid, but when he is fit is a very good player and is available on a free transfer this summer. I have to say I really do believe that Arsenal could have missed out on a good deal with Khedira.

According to German football publication Kicker, Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Dortmund defensive midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer.

Turned Down

The Gunners reportedly had a bid of around £18.4million turned for the Germany international in the January transfer window, but could put in an increased bid to sign the player who has been consistently linked with a move to north London for the past few years.

Despite an injury-hit few seasons with the German giants, Gundogan is still highly-regarded by some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Should the 24-year-old move on then Arsenal could face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona for his signature.

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has stated that he is looking forward to the all-important Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.

Having picked up maximum points from first two group games, the Gunners can make a giant step towards the knockout stages with three points from tomorrow’s match.

However, even with his side in excellent form at the moment, Mesut Ozil is adamant Arsenal cannot afford not to take the game very seriously.

“We have a good starting position, but the job is not done yet,” the Germany international told Kicker magazine.
