Arsenal are closing in on signing Borussia Dortmund’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to BBC, the Telegraph, Sky Sports and various other sources. The reported sum which the club would pay for the centre-back is £16million.

At 29, Sokratis has a year remaining on his contract at Dortmund. Along with Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner who is set to join Arsenal for free, the Greece international would represent another low-cost experienced addition to the squad’s defence department. Given the reported size of the funds available for transfers this summer, this is certainly the type of targets the club will be going for.

The 24-year-old sensation that is Fabinho made the headlines last night after it was confirmed that he’d be signing with Liverpool, just days after they lost the UEFA Champions League Final in Kiev. However, as reported by Sky Sports, it seems like there was another club in the running to land his signature at the eleventh hour: Arsenal.

The signing is a huge sign of intent from the Reds, especially given that they’ve moved so quickly in the wake of such a devastating defeat. It’s already starting to seem like they’re going to bounce back and learn from their loss to Real Madrid, which isn’t necessarily how most teams would react to a defeat in the UCL final.

Monaco full back Fabinho is the man of the hour right now in France thanks to his commanding displays and impressive Ligue 1 performances ever since his arrival in 2014.

The 23-year-old Brazil international joined the Principality club from Real Madrid, where he played as a loaned player from Rio Ave. He took off his Monaco career as a loanee, but got signed on a permanent deal in 2015 and has gone on to become a vital member of Leonardo Jardim’s team.

Following a season during which he made 34 Ligue 1 starts and scored 6 goals, Fabinho currently stands at 24 appearances for his club with 5 goals to his name.
