Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny has called time on his international career with France after Les Bleus World Cup triumph ‘did the defender a lot of psychological damage’. The defender also criticised French boss Didier Deschamps.

Confirmation of retirement on French TV

Talking to French TV station Canal+ Koscielny said:  “I think that I have given everything I can for France, I am 33, I have done two Euros, one World Cup,”

“France has a great generation of great players now. My injury does not change my decision. For Les Bleus, it is finished.

France boss Didier Deschamps named his 23-man World Cup squad on Thursday. Deschamps has an abundance of talented players to choose from but decided to omit Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette from his squad for Russia 2018.

The decision will have come as a slight surprise for the former Lyon striker after he played in France’s November friendlies, scoring a brace in a 2-2 draw with world champions Germany.

French boss has a lot of attacking talent at his disposal

Deschamps admitted his omission was due to the sheer number of attacking players available to him. The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Nabil Fekir were all named in that 23-man squad.

It seems almost inevitable that Arsenal will sign a striker this summer. The Gunners have been linked with the likes of French pair Loic Remy and Karim Benzema in recent weeks, but it must not be forgotten that compatriot Olivier Giroud did not do a bad job up front for the team last season.

International Teammates

Remy, Benzema and Giroud are teammates at international level with France and are in Les Bleus squad for this summer’s World Cup, where Giroud is odds of 40/1 to win the golden boot.

While many pundits had predicted a prolific season for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud following his bright start to the new season, few felt he would oust Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema out of the France starting line-up.

However, the Arsenal man was given the nod over Benzema for a recent World Cup qualifier against Belarus – which Les Blues won 4-2.

France manager Didier Deschamps admitted it will take time to accompany both strikers in the side, but he does hope the pair can form a formidable partnership.
