Arsenal favourites for Upamecano? 0

Arsenal are at the head of the queue to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to Tuttosport.

The report from the Italian outlet mostly deals with AC Milan’s interest in the 21-year-old, and its writer sees this development as a ‘mockery’ – that the club which Ivan Gazidis left to become the Rossoneri CEO should now surpass the seven-time European champions regarding a potential signing.

Boateng or Upamecano? 1

As the January transfer window slowly unfolds, Arsenal have been linked heavily with two players who could potentially boost the back line of the team. One of them is RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, young (21), talented, perceived by most as an old fashion centre-back – a player who ‘loves to defend’ as they say.

Adding such a player to the ranks probably wouldn’t solve much straight away. Every player who changes clubs, let alone leagues, needs time to adapt, to absorb the teachings and the tactical demands of the new coaching team. Experienced players usually get the hang of these issues much quicker than younger ones, and to expect a 21-year-old to come in and notably improve a defence that has been looking frail (to put it mildly) for years would seem a folly.

Bad news on Chambers injury 0

Calum Chambers was forced off the pitch in the defeat to Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday after a quarter of the game, and Arsenal had wait for a scan to determine the extent of the injury. The 24-year-old had only just started making some impact in the team, having made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, but now it seems he might sit the rest of it out.

The scan is now completed and the results are in, and the news is bad. As revealed by Gary Jacob of The Times, Chambers may have damaged his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which would potentially mean he won’t be playing again until the start of next season.

The January transfer window opens on New Year’s Day (Wednesday), and like every other club anywhere, Arsenal are preparing for a trip to the market. Whether they’ll end up selling or buying anything, or spend the month ‘just looking’, remains to be seen.

Despite the early signs announcing a highly frustrating summer transfer window this year, the club have pulled up their socks just in time, abandoned to fruitless Wilfried Zaha chase and grabbed Nicolas Pepe of Lille ahead of a number of other suitors.

The financial details of the deal haven’t officially been disclosed, but a number of reports claim the fee the Gunners will be paying for the winger’s services amounts to £72 million. So much for the £45 million transfer budget stories.
