Beth Mead finishes runner-up in Ballon d’Or 0

Posted on October 19, 2022 by Harry Kettle

As part of the Ballon d’Or Feminin festivities, Beth Mead was one of the leading contenders in the race to claim the big trophy.

She’d had a phenomenal campaign for Arsenal and England and in doing so, vaulted her profile into the stratosphere as one of the very best in the women’s game.

She won the Golden Boot at the Euros, scored 11 goals in the WSL and provided eight assists to go alongside it.

This is only the fourth time the trophy has been awarded and while it would’ve been great to see her get the big one, the fact she was able to nab 2nd place showcases just how talented she is.

It’s safe to say that out of all Arsenal players for both teams in the last few months and years, Beth Mead stands out as one of the most significant.

The 27-year-old from Whitby is easily one of the most intriguing talents in the business today with many tipping her to be in the running for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award in 2022.

In addition to that, she’ll also be up for BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year after an incredible run that saw her score 11 goals and register eight assists in another stellar series of outings. Plus, of course, she was integral to England’s success at the Euros, winning the Golden Boot as well as the Player of the Tournament.

It’s always great to see representatives of Arsenal Football Club do well on the international stage but for some reason, that’s usually concentrated on the men’s side of things.

In reality there’s often a lot to get excited about in women’s football, too, especially in the midst of the ongoing UEFA Euro 2022 tournament that’s taking place across England.

The Lionesses have impressed thus far and thanks to an 8-0 demolition of Norway earlier this week, they’ve officially booked their place in the quarter-finals with Beth Mead having a huge role to play in that courtesy of her hat-trick.
