Is criticism of Aaron Ramsey’s form this season unfair? 0

Posted on November 17, 2014 by David Nugent

Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey seems to have been on the end of a lot of criticism this season, after not making the best start to the Gunners campaign. Ramsey appeared for his country in a very creditable 0-0 draw against Belgium in their Euro 2016 qualifier last night.

Ramsey has enjoyed a slow start to his campaign and has scored just three times in his 17 appearances for club and country this season. That record is in stark contrast to last season when he scored 16 goals, despite missing most of the second half of the campaign.

Barcelona make £10M bid for Thomas Vermaelen 0

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is the subject of a £10M from Barcelona this summer, and as a result his future looks elsewhere. The Catalan giants have signed centre-back Jeremy Mathieu to bolster their options in the backline, but are seeking a more reputable figure.

Vermaelen rejected contract talks due to a lack of activity last season, and manager Arsene Wenger admitted he could leave. His contract with the Gunners only has 12 months to run, so his exit appears likely whether it’s this summer or next.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted Thomas Vermaelen could be sold this summer with Manchester United the favourites to procure his signature.

The Belgian international made just seven Premier League starts last season and only has 12 months remaining on his deal with the Londoners. There’s been no talk suggest a new deal will be signed so Arsenal are bracing themselves for his exit.

“At the moment, he is here. It could happen. Yes, it’s a possibility that he goes and if he goes we have to replace him because he is an important player in our squad,” said Wenger.

Are Arsenal going to make a bid for a centre-back? 0

While Thomas Vermaelen’s immediate future is uncertain, his inevitable exit from the Emirates stadium should push the London club to sign a replacement this summer.

The Belgian defender has only 12 months to go on his deal with Arsenal, and he’s made it clear that he wants first-team football next season, something the Gunners can’t promise as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are the current first-choice partnership.

Has Thomas Vermaelen been mismanaged by Arsenal? 2

With Thomas Vermaelen’s future uncertain with the club, and his deal only having 12 months to run with Arsenal, has he been another player poorly mismanaged?

The Belgian defender has played second-fiddle to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season, playing less than 800 minutes of Premier League football, while Wenger was trying to convince him that he had an important part to play in the Arsenal team.

Contracts talks should have been initiated in the previous campaign, as now it’s unlikely the 28-year-old will sign an extension with Arsenal. The Gunners are 5/1 to win the title, but with only senior three centrebacks at the club, one of whom wants to leave, Arsenal need another defender to boost their chances of success.

With rumours linking Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen with a move to Manchester United, manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he will find a replacement for the Belgian centre-back this summer.

New United manager Louis van Gaal reportedly made a £10M bid for Vermaelen, but Arsenal are keen to hold on to him. However, with the 28-year-old playing less than 800 minutes of Premier League football last season, he would jump at the chance to get regular first-team action elsewhere.

“I cannot guarantee that (he will stay at the club) but should he go, I will bring another centre back in for sure”, said Wenger.

Manchester United set to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen after agreeing terms 0

Arsenal defender and club-captain Thomas Vermaelen is close to joining Manchester United, with reports suggesting that the two clubs have agreed terms in an £11M deal. There are just a few minor details to finalise before the deal will officially go through, but Vermaelen’s exit does appear imminent, according to the Daily Star.

The lack of games afforded to him last season are said to have contributed to him wanting a move, coupled with manager Louis Van Gaal showing ambition in the transfer market with the signings of Southampton’s Luke Shaw and Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera.

In a very surprise twist, it does appear Thomas Vermaelen will be on his way out of the Emirates and to Old Trafford for Manchester United this summer, according to the Telegraph.

The Belgian international is said to have agreed a deal with United with a contract that could see him earning up to £100K a week.

Last season, Arsenal’s club captain made 14 Premier League appearances, but only half of them were starts. The lack of playing time was said to have been a factor of his decision to seek a move as Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have formed a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence.

Arsenal’s unsettled defender Thomas Vermaelen is being linked with a surprise move to Manchester United by the Daily Star. Considering his exit would see the Gunners with only two natural central defenders in which to choose form, it looks unlikely the Gunners will let him go.

Last season, Vermaelen, 28, made 14 Premier League appearances, boasting a 90.8% pass completion. But he was largely used from the substitutes’ bench. It’s led to him being discontented with the Londoners, and subsequently suitors are testing his resolve.

PSV forward Zakaria Bakkali is still said to be a summer target for Arsenal, with Liverpool also competing with the London outfit for his signature.

The 18-year-old scored three goals in 18 Eredivisie appearances this season, according to Transfermarkt. He’s a product of the PSV academy and has been tipped for a bright future. Arsenal are one of many top European sides who are interested in procuring his signature.

He made his first cap for the Belgian national team last year, and has played prominently for the U17’s prior to his senior team call-up, scoring seven goals in 12 games. The forward has also played in the Europa League for PSV, making four appearances. Not to mention featuring in two Champions League qualification matches.
