Verdict: France win

On Saturday afternoon, France and Argentina clash in the first knockout game of World Cup 2018. The two teams produced highly contrasting displays in the group stages, but will both see the quarter-finals as a realistic aim.

France made it through to the knockout stages with very little fuss, beating Australia and Peru, while drawing with Denmark in their final group game. However, there is a sense that Didier Deschamps team are still performing within themselves in Russia.

One of the great things about the World Cup is that it gives you the opportunity to take a look at players your club has been linked with. Sometimes they wind up being a little bit of a disappointment, but other times, they’re better than you possibly could’ve imagined. Still, it means absolutely nothing, because how they perform for their country can often differ in how they compete on a domestic level.

On Tuesday night, the complicated Group D of the World Cup reaches matchday three, as Nigeria and Argentina go head-to-head Saint Petersburg. A draw could be enough to see the African side make the knockout stages, while nothing but a win will see the South American giants make the last 16.

Following an opening game 2-0 defeat against group leaders Croatia, Nigeria recorded a 2-0 win over Iceland in their last outing to put their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages back in their hands.

Verdict: Draw

Best Odds: 12/5

On Thursday night, Argentina and Croatia clash in a potentially crucial clash in Group D of the World Cup. A win for either side could be pivotal in deciding who makes the knockout stages of the group.

Both sides head into this clash unbeaten in five World Cup games, including qualifiers, so this could be a tight encounter.

Argentina headed into World Cup 2018 with a number of concerns surrounding their team. Many of those concerns were confirmed in their opening match, as La Albiceleste drew 1-1 with Iceland after Lionel Messi saw a penalty saved.

Could World Cup win improve Ozil’s form next season? 0

Germany international playmaker Mesut Ozil arrived at Arsenal last summer from Real Madrid for a club record fee of around £42.3million. His arrival was greeted by great fanfare by most Gunners fans, as the former-Werder Bremen player was considered the European assist king.

He made a promising start to his Gunners career, before his season went downhill. He looked tired and picked-up an injury towards the end of the season.

World champion

As we all know Ozil’s Germany became world champions on Sunday night by defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra-time in the World Cup final. In truth though, Ozil had a quiet final and tournament really. He seemed to be on the peripheral of things for much of the competition in Brazil.

Damian Martinez joins Sheffield Wedensday on loan 0

Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Emiliano Martinez has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a month’s loan.

The 21-year old signed for the Gunners in 2010, but has so far been unable to force himself into the first-team and hopes to gain some valuable match experience while out on loan.

Martinez has featured for Argentina’s U17s and U20 – making two and five appearances respectively.

This season, he’s made two appearances for the Arsenal development side, but has grown frustrated at the lack of senior opportunities presented to him.

Arsene Wenger staying tight-lipped on transfers 0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he won’t be speaking about potential transfers for players – citing how he doesn’t want to give supporters false hope, or risk upsetting the harmony in the squad.

Real Madrid left-winger Angel Di Maria has been linked with the London outfit as Tottenham forward Gareth Bale looks to be joining the La Liga side and will subsequently replace the Argentine international.

Newcastle’s deep-lying playmaker Yohan Cabaye is also said to be a transfer target for the Gunners – who have already made a failed £10M bid.

Arsenal targeting Real Madrid duo Benzema and Di Maria 0

Arsenal’s ongoing pursuit of a big-name summer signing has now led them to Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and winger Angel Di Maria.

According to BBC Sport, the Gunners are willing to part with £40M in order to procure Benzema’s signature.

However, many feel it’s yet another fruitless endeavour, as Real Madrid will be left without any senior strikers in the side should Benzema be sold this summer.

Until Real Madrid enter the market for a new striker, it’s very unlikely the France international will be joining the Premier League outfit.

Lucas Biglia slips through Arsenal’s hands 0

Former Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia has snubbed English interest and has instead signed for Serie A side SS Lazio. The Argentine international has signed a five-year deal with the Italian outfit.

‘I’m really happy, everything has been defined. Finally I can stay with my new team-mates. I thank Lazio for signing me and taking me to Italy, and to have given me this opportunity.’

The 27-year old was courted by both Arsenal and Liverpool this summer, but either side failed to make a lasting impression on him.

Higuain Move to Arsenal Takes a Setback 2

Arsenal fans must be getting tired of the rumours linking them with a big-name signing, only to be let down at the last minute. However, it appears this summer’s protracted transfer of Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain potentially moving to the Premier League side has hit a stumbling block.

Madrid are reportedly holding out for more money – said to be around £40M. A fee Arsenal will in no terms pay for the Argentine international. They were apparently told the same from Liverpool after the Gunners had a £25M bid rejected for Luis Suarez.
