Arsenal are obviously in desperate need of a striker, potentially even two, this summer, and their search for players of the right pedigree goes a long way back. There’s hardly any need to stress – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is no longer at the club, and Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both set to follow the Gabonese through the exit door as free agents at the end of next month.
Like any other club serious about being competitive at top level, Arsenal are already preparing for the summer transfer window and drafting potential targets according to the assessments of what the squad needs to become stronger. According to the Evening Standard, the Gunners have set signing two strikers and a midfielder as their top priority, with a left-sided centre-back and a right back slightly lower on the wish list.
Arsenal tried to sign a striker in January, that much is clear having been reported far and wide by every journalist in the game. It’s also clear that they failed in that plan, and Fabrizio Romano has explained that the most important aspect of their intention was for the potential target to be considered a top player. The club were simply not going to spend money on a player about which they weren’t absolutely convinced.
Arsenal’s attempts to reinforce their ranks this summer certainly cannot be said to be going the right way up to this point. Desperately needing a striker, the club reportedly held a strong interest in Dusan Vlahovic, but the Serbia international seems to have chosen Juventus as his destination, following Fiorentina’s decision to accept a €75 million bid from the Old Lady.
As for the midfield section, the need to add some proper cover or competition for the duo of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka is obvious, and the club were said to be involved in talks with Juventus over Arthur Melo, and to have expressed an interest in Olympique Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes.
Arsenal have been credited with strong interest in signing Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina this month, but it seems the Gunners are now set to fail in their pursuit, with Juventus close to reaching an agreement to acquire his services.
Some reports in Italy even went as far as to claim that Arsenal had a bid of €80 million accepted by Fiorentina, but they also said Vlahovic himself was not keen to leave his current side halfway through the season when they’re fighting to finish in the top six.
The winter transfer window is officially open, and the rumours linking every club in the world with a host of players are sure to be fired at the unsuspecting public with relentless enthusiasm by the people who get paid simply to invent and write about them in a relatively convincing way.
Among the latest ones involving Arsenal comes from El Nacional, who claim the Gunners are the favourites in the race for the signature of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak.
