According to the Guardian, Arsenal is set to activate the buy-back clause in the contract of Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela. The Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay is believed to have told Spanish radio station Cadena SER: “Arsenal have informed us that Vela would be with them next season.”
The buy-back fee of £3.5million is a very small amount for a player that has just enjoyed probably the most productive campaign of his career so far. The Mexican forward scored 16 goals in La Liga and got 12 assists.
That fee is a measly amount of money for a player with such decent statistics in one of Europe’s top leagues.
It is no secret that Arsenal is looking to sign a central striker this summer. Carlos Vela can play as a central striker, but showed his versatility last season at Sociedad, spending much of the campaign playing as a right winger.
Vela appeared in every attacking position for Real Sociedad last season. His versatility could be a vital option for Arsenal next season.
A number of sources in the media have claimed that Vela does not want to return to the Emirates, after failing to adapt to life in England in his first spell. The 25-year-old seems settled in Spain and is obviously enjoying his football.
However, surely Vela would want to prove himself in the Premier League and show that he is a far better player than the one that left for Spain in 2012. Although if he moves to Arsenal he is unlikely to command a regular first team place, which may be a deciding factor for the forward.
The Mexican international has become a far better player in La Liga and has started to fulfil the immense potential that he was believed to have during his days at the Emirates. He was not really given a proper chance in his first spell and maybe this could hit chances for prove his doubters wrong.
Carlos Vela would be a very decent addition to the Arsenal squad. The Gunners will be expected to challenge for the Premier League title next season. The north London side is odds of 9/1 to win the league next season, but will need to strengthen their squad if they have any hope of a sustained challenge.
It seems to me that signing Carlos Vela for such a low fee would be a very shrewd move by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as he looks to strengthen his squad and attack ahead of the new campaign.
Surely Arsenal re-signing Vela is a no-brainer?
