According to the Mirror, Denis Suarez has informed Barcelona that he would like to move to Arsenal this month.
The attacking midfielder, well capable of performing well on either flank or through the middle, had reportedly been told by his current club back in December to start searching for a new club, as they had no place for him in their team. The report sparked interest in his services from clubs around Europe, and it was immediately clear he’d have no shortage of offers. Now it seems he has chosen Arsenal as his preferred destination, and he wants the switch to happen now, rather than in the summer.
Given his immense talent and roles he’s been playing throughout his career, Suarez would be the perfect replacement, arguably an upgrade even, for the departing Aaron Ramsey. His movement, vision and creativity would complement the attacking options already at the disposal of manager Unai Emery, who will know Suarez well from the time he managed him at Sevilla.
However, Barcelona’s stance has shifted slightly, and they are now reluctant to let the 25-year-old leave in the middle of the season. His contract, running through June 2020, does contain a buyout clause and the Gunners would be able to force the issue if they decided to do so, but the thing is, the deal the club have in mind is apparently a loan for the rest of the season that would be made permanent in the summer for £15 million.
There is still a lot of work to be done in terms of negotiations before his arrival to the Emirates in January becomes probable, but the Mirror claim it is the only ‘serious’ deal the club are working on at the moment. The winter transfer window is expected to remain a relatively quiet one, but significant funds will be put at Emery’s disposal in the summer.
