The transfer of Denis Suarez from Barcelona to Arsenal is one step closer after the two clubs held talks with a positive outcome, the Mirror have reported.
Manager Unai Emery is extremely keen on Suarez coming to the Emirates this month. However, the manager is still facing several difficult circumstances in which the deal needs to be completed.
There is reportedly some serious unrest at the club, and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is apparently set to leave north London and return to Germany. With problems surrounding the position of the man in charge of choosing and signing new players, no transfer is going to be easily done. In addition, the funds turned towards signings in January are extremely limited by all accounts, and the arrival of the 25-year-old attacking midfielder would have to be on loan for the rest of the season with an option to buy. Arsenal are hoping they will manage to pull such a deal off, and sign the player on a permanent basis next summer for the figure of £18 million.
Quite apart from Arsenal’s own problems, Barcelona are reportedly reluctant to let Suarez go halfway through the season, and even if they do agree to part ways with him now, they would only want a permanent deal right away.
The Gunners are pressing on with the task though, and Suarez’s strong desire to join them as soon as possible is certainly of great help.
Meanwhile, the same report claims Arsenal are looking to get rid of Mesut Ozil. They would even be prepared to subsidize his wages should they only manage to send him away on loan. With the German having been declared fully fit at the weekend and still not gone to the London Stadium to face West Ham on Saturday, it is becoming very obvious that he has no place in Emery’s plans.
Mirror also claim Arsenal have been linked with James Rodriguez who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Real Madrid, but that transfer is practically impossible in January because the Bavarians still haven’t decided whether or not they will exercise their option to buy the Colombian. Their sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić apparently said that decision will be left for the end of the season.
