Suarez deal falls through?

Posted on January 23, 2019 by Veselin Trajkovic

Spanish football expert journalist Guillem Balague claims the transfer of Denis Suarez from Barcelona to Arsenal will not be happening this month. The midfielder has apparently decided to stay at Camp Nou after the two clubs failed to agree on all aspects of the deal.

According to Balague, Barcelona demanded a clause to be inserted into the deal, one that would force Arsenal to make the deal permanent in the summer and pay a fee amounting to somewhere in between €20 million and €25 million. Arsenal refused the Catalans’ wish and the deal has seemingly gone down the drain, at least as far as this transfer window is concerned.

As recently as yesterday (Tuesday), it was reported that the deal was very close, and that it might be completed within this week. Barcelona have apparently completed the incoming transfers planned for January, and are now looking at potential departures from the club with manager Ernesto Valverde saying that the club would be willing to part ways with any player who wished to leave due to a lack of game-time.

The Mirror saw that as the moment when Suarez would complete his switch to the Emirates, but it seems the opportunity has been missed with Arsenal obviously reluctant to tie €20 million or more of the summer transfer window budget so early.

If Balague’s allegations prove correct, it immediately poses the question of Aaron Ramsey leaving north London this month in turn. The Welshman’s contract expires after this season with all negotiations about a new one utterly abandoned. Juventus reportedly wanted to get him to Turin now rather than the summer, and Arsenal were inclined to allow that to happen – once they wrap up the transfer of Suarez.

With that out of the window, and given the injury problems that have recently struck Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, it is to be expected Ramsey will be staying put for the rest of the season.
