According to BBC Sport, Arsenal’s proposed transfer targets Shkodran Mustafi of Valencia and Lucas Perez of Deportivo La Coruna should be undergoing their medicals with the London club today, and Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has said the pair could be unveiled by Arsenal this afternoon – “Mustafi is travelling to London and will be presented as an Arsenal player alongside Lucas Perez around 3pm today.”
Arsenal travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford in the Premier League this weekend, and are 8/11 to pick up all three points, but it’s unlikely their two impending arrivals will be travelling with the squad. As a result, Rob Holding and Laurent Koscielny could partner one another at the heart of the defence until Mustafi is match fit to start, while Lucas Perez could be introduced gradually in the coming games.
Arsenal have taken their summer spending over £100M with their new defender and striker costing over £50M, in addition to the likes of Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding, Takuma Asano and Kelechi Nwakali. Supporters have been frustrated with the club and manager Arsene Wenger with the side looking threadbare on options in defence and directly in attack, but Mustafi and Lucas will be useful.
Arsenal’s pursuit for Mustafi was long-winded with the Londoners and Valencia fight over his asking price. But now it appears the Gunners finally have another centre-back to make up for the injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista. And in Lucas, Arsenal have a forward who can play anywhere along the front three and will inject pace into the attack.
