Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri has turned down interest from Arsenal to sign for AS Roma, according to the Metro. The 25-year-old joined the Italian Serie A giants for £30m and signed a five-year-deal. Nice are believed to be holding out for £35m but personal terms have been agreed and the deal should be concluded soon enough.
Seri, a transfer target for Spanish La Liga side Barcelona, made 34 Ligue 1 appearances for Nice last season, scoring seven goals and making nine assists. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger travelled to Nice with chief executive Ivan Gazidis to try and broker a deal for the midfielder, but the Gunners were unsuccessful procuring his signature.
With the likes of Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny expected to leave the club this summer, Arsenal are expected to bring in at least one replacement. However, the Gunners have so far signed just one player in the transfer window, Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac. Seri is a creative midfielder boasting high levels of industry and would have been a great addition in the Arsenal side.
Arsenal have Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla for such a role, two of which players have suffered from long-term injuries. As a result, it was expected the Londoners would sign a playmaker type, especially with the future of Mesut Ozil in the air. But with Seri choosing Roma over Arsenal, the Gunners are forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.
