Arsenal could be set for a double raid on Real Sociedad this summer. The Gunners have been linked with re-signing their former striker Carlos Vela, but the Daily Mail claim that the Gunners are also looking at renewing their interest in teammate Antoine Griezmann this summer.
Griezmann has developed steadily at Real Sociedad in recent years and at 23-years of age is starting to fulfil his immense potential. Last season Griezmann scored 21 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions and got three assists.
The youngsters form lead to a call-up to France’s 23-man World Cup squad. If he gets the opportunity to impress in Brazil, no doubt his stock will rise and his price tag will rise with it. Griezmann is rated at £18million, but his contract runs out in 2015.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is obviously a fan of his compatriot and has already stated the Gunners interest in the attacking midfielder.
There seems to be a real interest in the Frenchman, as Wenger has monitored the player’s progress for a number of seasons. It seems that this summer that interest in the player may become more solid.
Although Arsenal are well stocked with attacking midfielders, not only is Griezmann talented, but he is also very versatile. The French youngster can play on both wings, as central attacking midfielder and has occasional played as a central striker.
That versatility can be a big asset during a long season. It gives teams flexibility in the fact that they can move players around and rotate the squad.
Griezmann’s teammate Carlos Vela has also been heavily linked with a return to the Emirates this summer. The 25-year-old Mexican forward has matured into a far better player than the one we saw in his spell at Arsenal.
Vela has found the net 17 times this season in 42 appearances and has 12 assists to his name. Vela is also versatile having played on the right-wing for much of the season, as well as up front and behind the main striker.
Arsenal has the right to buy-back Vela for a measly £3.3million this summer. The Gunners would be mad not to exercise that clause. That fee is a small amount of money for a player that is starting to fulfil his potential.
Vela is worth far more than £3.3million, but because of the clause Arsenal can take advantage and add a very good forward to their attacking armoury.
Arsenal is expected to challenge for the Premier League title again this season, which they are odds of 9/1 to win. Part of the reason that their title bid failed last season was a lack of attacking options, but Arsene Wenger has the chance to put that right with the signing of these two players.
For just over £20million the Gunners could get two international attacking players that look set to fulfil their early career promise. It is hard to argue that they do not represent good value for money, something that Wenger loves in his new signings.
Would Real Sociedad pair be good signings for Arsenal?
