On Monday afternoon, World Cup hosts Russia face Uruguay in Group A, as the pair look to top the group and face a potentially more comfortable tie in the knockout stages of the competition.

Uruguay have won beaten Egypt and Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Group A to seal a knockout spot. However, the South American giants need to win this game to have any chance of finishing top of their group at Russia 2018. Oscar Tabarez’s side were pre-tournament favourites to top the group, but are currently second place.

La Celeste have not hit top form of late but are on a five-game winning run. A strong defence has been the basis of that winning run, as they have kept clean sheets in their last five outings.

Team News

Uruguay boss Tabarez made two changes in the game from their opener. The experienced boss could name the same starting eleven for this game, as he has no reported injury worries or suspensions.

Host nation Russia have surprised everybody at World Cup 2018, winning both of their games and scoring eight times in the process. Stanley Cherchesov’s team have already sealed their spot in the knockout stages, while a draw would also see the hosts finish as group winners.

Russia have not made the last 16 of the World Cup in 32 years, so this has already been a special tournament for the hosts. Winning their group would be an even bigger achievement. With their recent momentum, it is a big possibility.

Villarreal winger Denis Cheryshev is also in the race for the Golden Boot, as the former Real Madrid star has scored three times in his two appearances so far at the World Cup. He is now just one behind top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Team News

Midfield playmaker Alan Dzagoev is likely to miss this game through the ankle injury he picked up in Russia’s opener, so the Russia starting eleven may be the same as last time out.

Uruguay have far more quality than they have shown so far in Russia. However, they have had enough ability to grind out wins. Russia’s performances have been far beyond the home fans imaginations on home soil.

Uruguay arguably has the better quality players, while the home nation has the positive momentum heading into the clash. I can this game being tight and ending in a low scoring draw.
