Former-Arsenal player Paul Merson has branded the team’s transfer business as ‘laughable’ after the club are reportedly going to begin talks to offer Jack Wilshere a new contract with the player only making one Premier League start this season.
Arsenal were held to a hugely disappointing draw by West Ham in the week as their Premier League campaign took another blow. Their stalemate with the Hammers was preceded by a tie with Southampton at the weekend, with the two sides sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
This has left Arsene Wenger’s men in seventh-place in the league with 30 points, a point behind Tottenham in fourth and the last Champions League place. While the gap between themselves and a place in Europe’s premier competition is slim, Burnley, Liverpool and Tottenham are also vying for the spot, meaning the competition is incredibly high this season.
Paul Merson, who is a former Gunner, has been vocal about the fact the London club are below Burnley at this point in the season, and he has now branded their transfers ‘laughable’ after it was revealed that Jack Wilshere was to discuss a new deal with the club.
Merson said on Sky Sports News: “Laughable, in my opinion, he doesn’t play. He plays one game, starts one game against West Ham and now they’re going to give him a new contract”.
“If you’re Jack Wilshere you seriously have to sit down and say ‘right, what do I want to do? Do I want to be a bit-part player for the rest of my career or do I want to go somewhere and play football? He could sign a contract tomorrow morning and be out the team for another six months”.
It does seem as though Arsenal’s transfer policy is very odd, with Wilshere making just one start this season, with that sort of injury form often seeing a club reluctant to offer a player a new contract.
