Paul Merson has heaped praise on Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin after the Gunners 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League last weekend despite the defender receiving some criticism of late.
Arsenal fell to a hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham last weekend as their Premier League campaign took yet another major blow. Harry Kane was the only scorer in the match as he outshone Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, with Spurs dominating the match.
The defeat means that Arsenal are now seven points short of Tottenham in fifth, while they are eight behind Chelsea in fourth-place. With the top-four places so hotly contested this season, the massive gap they now find between themselves and the teams above them is nearing insurmountable, with the Gunners in danger of missing out on Champions League football for a second successive season.
The situation they currently find themselves in is bad, and it was compounded by an awful display on the pitch as so many of their stars struggled.
However, one man that Paul Merson feels played well was right-back Hector Bellerin. The Spanish defender has come in for some criticism in recent weeks as he has put in some performances that are below his high standards.
However. Merson told Sky Sports: “Watching the game, for me Bellerin played well. I thought Bellerin played well, I didn’t think (Heung Min) Son had a touch, I thought he defended well”.
Bar Bellerin, it was a decidedly poor performance from the visiting side as they failed to ever really turn up in the game. The stakes were incredibly high and they needed to be at their best. but their 5-1 victory over Everton in the game beforehand counted for very little as they fell to yet another loss.
