The Daily Mirror are reporting that Arsenal are set to launch a world-record £125million bid for Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe this summer.
The story seems like a fairytale from a journalist with too much time on his hands or after a few too many drinks. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hates to part with money, so for the French boss to part with that sort of money for one player, albeit a highly rated player seems ridiculous.
Mbappe is hot property
Mbappe is one of the most in-demand footballers on the planet at the moment. All of Europe’s biggest clubs are reportedly on the trail of the 18-year-old. Spanish giants Real Madrid are the favourites to sign the striker this summer.
Mbappe enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign last season, scoring 15 goals and producing eight assists in Ligue One, as Monaco won the French top-flight title. The teenager also scored six times in the just nine Champions League appearances.
His quality was all too evident last season and big things are expected of the youngster in years to come. Mbappe is definitely a player with the potential to become a superstar in the future.
Arsenal will not spend that sort of money
The Arsenal hierarchy and Wenger have run a tight financial ship in recent years. It would difficult to see the Gunners all of a sudden attempt to do a deal of this sort.
There are reports that the Gunners are quibbling with Lyon over a fee for Alexandre Lacazette, so for the club from north London to spend £125million seems highly unlikely.
Real Madrid are the sort of club that splashes out big money on big name players and makes statement signings. Arsenal have not been that sort of club for a long time.
Arsenal needs to sign a new striker
For me, Arsenal needs to sign a new striker this summer. I highly doubt that the Gunners will secure the services of Kylian Mbappe this summer. They may well have better luck signing Lyon’s Lacazette, though.
However, we have all been there before with Arsenal and supposed deals for strikers. Lacazette has been prolific for Lyon in recent years and could well be for Arsenal. Like with so many stories about Arsenal and signing players you do not know what to believe.
I am pretty sure that Arsenal will not be paying £125million this summer for Kylian Mbappe and the Arsenal transfer circus will continue touring this summer.
Does Arsenal have any chance of signing Mbappe this summer?
