Nacho Monreal insists star duo won’t leave in January

Posted on November 22, 2017 by Ben Darvill

Arsenal dismantled Tottenham 2-0 in the north London derby as the Gunners took a massive step towards revitalising their Premier League campaign. Arsene Wenger has had to deal with a lot of criticism recently, while his two best players in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are supposedly on the cusp of leaving. However, Nacho Monreal has claimed otherwise.

It was exactly the sort of performance that Arsenal needed on Saturday as they came back from their disappointing defeat at the hands of Manchester City. Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez were on target in the win, with the home side good value for the victory.

Indeed, their triumph was despite many installing Tottenham as the favourites for the game. The win means that Arsenal stay in sixth, but they are now just a point shy of Tottenham in fourth, with a Champions League spot what they will be hoping for this season.

Along with the win itself came the rejuvenation of both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, with the two outstanding on the day. While rumours have circled regarding their future, defender Nacho Monreal remains adamant that the pair are committed to the Gunners.

He said: “The feeling is that they will continue. At no time have we talked about the possibility of them leaving. Not at all. They are committed to the group and we will see what happens”.

“I can’t say much about it. It does not depend on me. The situation is clear. They are two vital players for Arsenal. They are two players who end their contracts at the end of the season”.

“If the club want them to stay beyond December [the January transfer window] they will follow. Yet, I do not know the club’s intentions. It is other people who are the ones who have to make a decision”.

If they leave next summer instead of this January … it will cost the club tens of millions which could have been spent on players.
