As we all know Arsenal is in need of a first choice right-back this summer and replacing departed French full-back Bacary Sagna is one of Arsene Wenger’s biggest summer priorities. The north London club have been linked with both France’s Mathieu Debuchy and Ivory Coast’s Serge Aurier in recent weeks and months.
Arsenal have been favourites to sign the Ivorian international star Aurier for a few months, yet the Gunners still have not made a move. The youngster has already revealed that his preferred destination is the Emirates.
For a reported fee of £8million the youngster looks ideal for the Gunners. Aurier was one of the Ivory Coast’s better players at the World Cup, as the Elephants exited the World Cup at group stage.
The Daily Mail is now claiming that Tottenham are showing an interest in signing the Toulouse star. Liverpool was also believed to have held an interest in the 21-year-old, so surely Arsenal has to move quickly to secure the talented youngsters signature?
The Daily Mirror is linking Arsenal with an alternative in Newcastle and France international full-back Mathieu Debuchy. The 28-year-old is currently away on international duty at the World Cup, where Les Bleus are 11/5 to make it past Germany in the quarter-finals.
Debuchy appears to be ahead of former-Gunner Bacary Sagna in the French pecking order and is highly-rated. The former-Lille star had a good season at Newcastle and his Premier League experience would be a bonus for the Gunners.
However, the Frenchman will turn 29 in July, so he is not exactly young and at a mooted fee of £12million would likely cost more than the young Ivorian star.
I have to admit I have been highly impressed by young Aurier at the World Cup, especially with his athleticism and raids forward to help out his attack. The youngster looks to have all the attributes to make it in the Premier League.
He may not have the same experience as Debuchy, but he strikes me as an Arsene Wenger-type signing. Aurier has the potential to improve greatly and be developed into a top full-back. Wenger likes attempting to develop young talent.
Debuchy is unlikely to improve that much in the future. He would be a decent signing for the Gunners, but for me I would prefer the Gunners to sign the highly-rated Ivorian youngster.
Which right-back should Arsenal sign this summer?
