Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was one of the few members of the first team squad that can hold their head up high after the draw against Vitoria SC, and in the wake of the game, Martinez spoke to the media.
On how challenging the game was:
It was quite difficult, especially in the first half. The pitch wasn’t great and we couldn’t find many good occasions to score. They had some good shots in the first half but we handled it quite well and defended well too. We moved the ball quicker in the second half and we were unlucky to concede in the end.
On conceding a late equaliser:
We defended well. They had so many shots but we defended it well. We scored late so we wanted to keep the ball and score a second, but we didn’t create enough chances to do that.
On his performance:
I tried to keep us in the game. When you concede so late on, it’s frustrating because you can go a whole 90 minutes without conceding and then in stoppage time you concede. It was a deflected shot and then headed back… the volley could have gone anywhere. It bounced into the top corner so it’s frustrating for me, for us. At the end we had to settle for a draw.
On playing a back three:
It doesn’t have any impact on my game, I just need to defend the goal. For me, it’s the same whether it’s three or four at the back. The manager decided to play with three at the back, so we’ll support him and do what he says.
On focusing on Leicester:
We’re already thinking about Leicester. This game is finished. We know what we can improve and then we’ll try to go to Leicester to get the win.
