Former-Arsenal defender Martin Keown has claimed that Jack Wilshere is as good as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, while he has told Arsene Wenger to build a team around the English-midfielder, who has been a standout player for the club in recent weeks.
Arsenal’s last Premier League game ended in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea as the two London sides played out one of the games of the season. There was no shortage of stunning goals, big tackles and moments of controversy as Arsene Wenger’s men dropped two valuable points.
Arsenal currently sit in sixth-place in the table with 39 points, two short of Tottenham in fifth, and five behind Liverpool in the final Champions League spot. Considering Manchester City are currently 23 points ahead of the Gunners, their aim must now be to take a Champions League place for next season, but it will not be an easy task.
Indeed, they will need their best players firing on all cylinders, and Martin Keown has claimed that Jack Wilshere is one of those stars. He told talkSPORT: “Jack Wilshere encompasses the future. He’s like a shining light, coming back from a career that looked like it was going to be finished at the top level. He’s as good as these guys. He’s the player Arsene Wenger needs to build around, if he can trust him”.
Wilshere’s performances in the last few weeks have given Arsenal a base to build upon when defending and keeping the ball, while he has given the Gunners a different presence when going forward, with his incisive passing and vision a feature of the London side when attacking.
While some might question whether Wilshere is in the same class as Sanchez and Ozil, Keown claiming that Wenger should build a team around the Englishman is one that many will agree with, as Wilshere has been a shining light in the Gunners’ midfield in recent weeks.
