Latest transfer rumours: Guimaraes, Kulusevski, Saka

It’s the evening on the final day of the year, and the January transfer window will be open in a couple of hours. It’s not really surprising, therefore, that transfer rumours have started picking up pace. Let’s take a look at a couple of recent ones involving Arsenal.

Dejan Kulusevski

According to Calciomercato, Arsenal lead the race to sign the Juventus winger ahead of neighbours and arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Juventus are believed to be holding out for a fee of €35 million, which is not that much for a player like Kulusevski – 21 and notably talented.

However, with Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe in their ranks already, it’s hard to imagine the club spending money on a young winger at this point. That could change, of course, if either Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Nicolas Pepe were to leave, but as things stand right now, neither looks likely to happen. Aubameyang was linked with Barcelona, but the Catalans have already signed Ferran Torres from Manchester City and they’re reportedly in talks with Juventus about Alvaro Morata.

Bruno Guimaraes

Journalist by the name of Nicolo Schira claims Arsenal have opened talks with Olympique Lyon about Bruno Guimaraes. Technical director Edu is apparently impressed with the 24-year-old defensive midfielder, who could perhaps provide some competition for Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka; at least more than Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles have done so far.

“Let’s see what happens,” says Schira. In the transfer market all the players have a price.

“It’s not a simple deal for Arsenal, but Edu is working and – if arrives an important bid – Aulas could sell Bruno Guimaraes.”

Bukayo Saka

This one’s the strangest one of the lot, it has to be said. Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell appears worried that Saka might want to leave, pointing to a reported interest from Liverpool, unless the Gunners tie him down to a new contract soon.

“When you get young players who just come out and do really, really well, you’ve got to protect them, you’ve got to secure them,” Campbell told talkSPORT.

“They’re the lifeblood for the fans, for their country, England, and especially Arsenal. You can’t allow top, top players to run their contracts down and move on because you’re taking too long.”

It’s really interesting and all, but it doesn’t seem like Campbell is aware of the fact that Saka signed a new contract last year, and that he’s currently bound to the club until the summer of 2024. Arsenal surely needn’t worry about the England international for the rest of this season, though his situation will probably need to be looked at come next autumn.
