Latest on potential Arthur and Vlahovic transfers

Arsenal continue to put strong effort into signing both Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus and Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina on a permanent deal, according to numerous sources. However, neither deal represents straightforward business, and various complications are the reason why neither has made the switch yet.

The Gunners want Arthur on a straight loan for the rest of the season and nothing more. On the other hand, Juventus are only prepared to let the midfielder go if they secure a proper replacement (they’ve been linked with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria), as head coach Massimiliano Allegri feels he needs a reliable midfielder outside his regular starting XI.

But even that happens, the Serie A side insist on the loan being set for 18 months and not just for this season. They would also give Arsenal the option of making the move permanent at the end of that time. It remains to be seen if the club would be willing to accept such an offer.

Mikel Arteta’s midfield ranks have already received a significant boost with Thomas Partey, who has returned earlier than he’d have wanted to from Ghana’s involvement in the African Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, if reports from Italy are to be believed, Arsenal are said to have had an offer of €80m (around £66m) accepted by Fiorentina for Vlahovic.

The Serbian striker, however, still doesn’t wish to leave Florence in January, and it’s now up to Arsenal to convince him otherwise. If they fail, their chances of obtaining the 21-year-old’s services are likely to diminish severely, with a number of top European clubs expected to enter the race in the summer. It would, in that case, be absolutely crucial for Arsenal to finish inside the top four and secure a place in the Champions League.

Vlahovic is apparently keen to stay put and help Fiorentina reach European football again before he leaves.
