Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat at Stoke on Saturday evening, losing courtesy of a debut goal from on loan forward Jese.

Stoke offered the first real threat on goal after just three minutes. Darren Fletcher found debutant Jese, who took on Shkodran Mustafi before forcing a low save from an acute angle from Petr Cech.

Arsenal has their first sight of goal on 11 minutes, as Mustafi got his head onto a Granit Xhaka ball at the far post, only for Danny Welbeck to fail to get to the ball. The Gunners went slightly closer a few minutes later, as Jack Butland comfortably saved Aaron Ramsey’s tame low shot.

Butland was in action again on 19 minutes, producing a smart save from a Danny Welbeck effort on goal. The Potters virtually went straight up the other end, but Cech comfortably saved Choupo-Moting’s effort from inside the area.

Arsenal threatened the Potters goal on 27 minutes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played a free-kick over the Stoke defence to Ramsey at the far post, only for the Butland to come out of his goal and deny the midfielder at close-range.

On the half-hour Stoke centre-back Ryan Shawcross headed wide of goal from inside the area when he was left unmarked. Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin then hit an effort from the edge of the area, only to get it all wrong and fire well over the bar.

Xhaka tried an effort from distance soon afterwards, but Butland got down low comfortably to keep the attempt out.

Stoke took the lead early in the second half. Saido Berahino played in debutant Jese Rodriguez and the loanee fired low beyond Cech at his far post from inside the penalty area.

On 58 minutes, Arsenal broke through the Stoke defence, as Hector Bellerin found himself clear in the box, but the full-back’s low shot was smothered by Butland. Just before the hour mark, Danny Welbeck headed over the bar from a good position in the penalty box.

Ramsey also poked an effort towards goal from a Mustafi cross, but again Butland got down well to produce a comfortable save. Up the other end of the pitch Berahino headed towards goal from Eric Pieters cross from the left, but Cech produced a good save to put it out for a corner kick.

Choupo-Moting fired into the side-netting on 63 minutes, when the forward was left completely unmarked at the far post. Butland produced a low brave save at the feet of Welbeck on 67 minutes.

The Gunners started to press for an equaliser on 70 minutes, as Mesut Ozil curled an effort just wide of Butland’s goal from the edge of the area.

The visitors looked to have equalised on 72 minutes. Gunners striker Alexandre Lacazette smashed an effort home from inside the area. However, the referee’s assistant decided to flag the Frenchman for offside.

Arsenal continued to press for an equaliser, with Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott sent on to aid the effort. However, the Gunners struggled to break down a resolute Potters defence. Deep into stoppage-time, substitute Olivier Giroud headed wide of goal from a Nacho Monreal cross when completely unmarked in the penalty box.

The Frenchman’s effort was the last of the game, as the Gunners went down to their first defeat of the Premier League season.
