Arsenal midfield playmaker Jack Wilshere is a summer transfer target for West Ham, according to the Daily Star. Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is believed to be a big fan of Wilshere from his previous spell in the Premier League in charge of Manchester City.
Wilshere’s contract with the Gunners expires at the end of the month and the two parties are yet to agree on an extension. If an agreement is not reached, the midfielder could leave the Irons as a free agent, which means the north London club will receive no fee for the midfielder.
Not quite fulfilled potential
Wilshere was hyped up up as the next saviour of English football when he broke into the Arsenal team a decade ago. However, he has struggled to live-up to his hype, mainly due to injury problems which have constantly hindered his Arsenal career.
Last season he did show flashes of his undoubted ability in a Gunners shirt. His encouraging displays led to calls from some for the club to hand him a new contract on his terms, rather than the reduced wage offer Arsenal have offered the midfielder.
The midfielder may need a fresh start
Although it is believed that Wilshere’s preferred option is to stay at Arsenal, a fresh start may do him some good. A loan move to Bournemouth did not exactly go to plan, but he knew the move was all about proving he can stay fit and played on a regular basis.
He stayed injury-free until late in the season and played in the majority of the Cherries games during his temporary spell on the south coast. Maybe a permanent move elsewhere would kick start his career.
Reportedly new Arsenal boss Unai Emery wants the midfielder to sign a new deal with the club. However, the midfielder is believed to be unhappy with the aforementioned reduced terms in pay that Arsenal have offered him to stay, which is a deal based on how many games he plays.
If Wilshere does decide to move on this summer he will be in-demand. The likes of Newcastle, Everton , Wolves and Crystal Palace are all reportedly interested in signing the midfielder. However, a move to West Ham may prove the most appealing, as Pellegrini attempts to revive the fortunes of the struggling Hammers this summer.
It is certainly an interesting situation for the midfielder and talks over his future later this month with boss Emery are likely to make Wilshere’s future far clearer.
