It’s been known for a few days now that Arsenal are interested in bringing Steven N’Zonzi to the Emirates, but as reported by The Independent, the latest development in the story could provide the club with a few hiccups. It has been suggested that in order for N’Zonzi to move to North London, Arsenal would need to trigger his release clause. While that may seem like an obvious move for them to make if they’re that interested, his release clause rests at £35 million.
In the present day, there are two ways to look at this – the way football is going, £35 million isn’t that much of a stretch, and those kinds of figures are being thrown around on a daily basis. On the other hand, some will believe that spending that much on someone who hasn’t played in the Premier League for a few years would serve as a big waste of money and time.
In terms of Steven N’Zonzi himself, however, we’re personally of the belief that he would be a fascinating acquisition for the club. The Frenchman signed a new deal early last year that was intended to keep him in Spain until 2020, which is a clear sign of how much they value him over there.
N’Zonzi is powerful, tall and slightly unconventional, and perhaps that’s exactly what this new Arsenal team needs. Unai Emery is clearly trying to make a statement with some of these signings and this would be his biggest yet, if only because of how different N’Zonzi is from the likes of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey.
He’s a proven commodity in the PL as we saw back in his Stoke City days, and while that was a few years ago, he’s only gotten better since then. His confidence has grown in La Liga and at the age 0f 29, you could certainly argue that he hasn’t even reached his prime yet.
The money involved in football is indeed ridiculous, and there’s no way to get around that fact. Sometimes, however, you need to do what’s right for your own business – and Arsenal would be better off in the long run if they can bring someone like N’Zonzi to the club.
Should Arsenal sign Steven N’Zonzi?
