Arsenal host Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday in the hotly-anticipated north London derby. Ahead of the game, Ian Wright has sent a message to Arsene Wenger’s players, with the contest turning into a must-win game.
Arsenal fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat in their last game against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. While it is in no way embarrassing to lose to City, it was a game they had to win to maintain their slim title hopes.
Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus saw the home side to a comfortable win, with Arsenal only able to hit back through substitute Alexandre Lacazette.
The defeat means that City now have a 12 point lead over Arsenal, who have also fallen three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Liverpool’s win ultimately meant that the Gunners slipped into sixth, with the weekend proving an abysmal one for Wenger and his men.
With the international break drawing to a close, the club will be turning their attention to their must-win game with arch-rivals Tottenham, who are four points clear of the Gunners and in fine form.
Ahead of the game, Ian Wright sent a strong message to the Arsenal players, telling Sky Sports: “There’s (been) a lot of progress at Spurs. I was just asked about the London derby and they’ve just beaten Real Madrid and beaten them convincingly and they were very impressive”.
“The derby is something that our players should be going into thinking ‘I don’t care, I don’t care if they’ve got capes on with S on them’. They should be looking to beat them”.
A defeat for Arsenal would mean they will likely fall even further behind the teams around them, and it would also give the Tottenham’s fans another reason to be smug after finishing above Arsenal in the league last season.
