Henrikh Mkhitaryan has claimed that a top-four finish in the Premier League is still a possibility for Arsenal despite the fact they find themselves some way behind the teams in the Champions League places this season.
Arsenal have turned their attention to the Europa League this evening as they look to complete the job over Ostersunds. The London side hold a three-goal advantage after the first league following a 3-0 win.
The Europa League has become their most likely route back into the Champions League after their Premier League campaign began to stall massively.
The Gunners are currently a massive seven points short of Tottenham in fifth, while they are eight behind Chelsea in fourth. The top-four was always going to be incredibly tight this season meaning the London side could not afford to lose ground on those above them, and yet that is exactly what has happened.
This has seen many write them off in the league as they only have 11 games left to close the gap on those above them. However, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has claimed that the Gunners can still finish in the top-four.
Mkhitaryan told ESPN: “Of course, it [Europa League] is very important, but I wouldn’t say we stop ourselves from saying we are going to compete in the top four”.
“We are still in the competition because in the English Premier League anything is possible. Maybe sometimes, teams can lose two, three times in a row and we win our games so anything is possible”.
“We are trying to win every game in every competition and, of course, we will be glad if we can win the Europa League as well, but if we can be in the top four, it will be even better”.
The incredibly unpredictable nature of the Premier League does mean that it would be foolish to write Arsenal off right now, but they must add consistency to their game if they are to make a late dash for the Champions League spots.
