According to the Daily Express, Arsenal boss Unai Emery will attempt to sell attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer. Both have previously been linked with exits.
However, as they are two of the highest earners at the club and funds are tight as Emery attempts to rebuild a fragile Gunners squad.
Both enjoyed mixed fortunes at Arsenal
It would be hard to say that either Ozil or Mkhitaryan have been roaring success in north London. Ozil is such a mercurial character, obviously talented. However, the biggest frustration with the playmaker is that we have seen what he can do when on form.
The German has to be considered a far bigger flop than his Armenian teammate. Mainly due to his price tag and his enormous wages. Ozil has struggled to impress Gunners boss Emery and has been and out of the starting eleven this season.
Mkhitaryan has never really produced his top form in England, at Arsenal or previous club Manchester United. The player who shone so brightly at Dortmund has only really flicked occasionally in the Premier League. Like Ozil, his Arsenal career has been blighted by inconsistency.
Mkhitaryan has started just 18 Premier League games this season. The 30-year-old is certainly not irreplaceable this summer.
Would need replacing
The likes of Petr Cech and Danny Welbeck will leave the Gunners this summer and youngster could probably fill the void left by the pair. They are no longer essential players to the team.
While Ozil and Mkhitaryan are no longer essential first teamers, the Gunners do not have tremendous strength-in-depth when it comes to attacking midfielders. In fact, if the pair left this summer, Arsenal would only have Alex Iwobi who is considered an attacking midfielder or winger.
The Gunners would have to go into the transfer market to sign replacements. With defensive reinforcements the priority, it would be difficult to sell both and find reasonably priced replacements.
Arsenal squad needs a big rebuild
There is no doubt that Arsenal’s squad needs a big revamp this summer. Nearly every department of the team needs strengthening, with the exception of the forward line.
It will be difficult for Unai Emery to bring in enough quality to challenge for the top-four once again next season. The Gunners closest rivals will also strengthen. However, they may be prepared to spend a bit more than the north London club.
It will be an interesting summer transfer window that is for sure for Arsenal. I would be very surprised if both Ozil and Mkhitaryan left the Gunners this summer.
