Giroud rescues a late point for Arsenal at Southampton

Posted on December 10, 2017 by David Nugent

On Sunday afternoon, Arsenal needed an 88th-minute equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The home side took the lead on three minutes. Per Mertesacker gives the ball away, Dusan Tadic beat the German defender before finding Charlie Austin, who kept himself onside and calmly beat Petr Cech.

The Saints came close to doubling their lead two minutes later, with Tadic and Austin combining once again. However, this time Cech produced a good save from Austin’s effort from a tight angle.

Austin struck the post on eight minutes from Nathan Redmond’s cross. The effort would not have counted anyway, as the referee’s assistant flagged the striker for offside.

The Gunners had their first real attempt on goal on 17 minutes. Alexis Sanchez fired a cross into Granit Xhaka, which deflected off the midfielders head into the path of Alexandre Lacazette, who shot straight at Saints ‘keeper Fraser Forster.

The visitors threatened again a few minutes later. Sanchez broke at speed to find Lacazette, who looked set to score only for a superb last-ditch tackle from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to take the ball behind for a corner kick.

Arsenal came close to equalising on 33 minutes. Sanchez produced some good work down the wing to find Aaron Ramsey just on the edge of the area. The Welsh midfielder then produced a powerful low effort that saw Forster get down superbly at his near post to save.

Lacazette fired over the bar on 41 minutes, as the striker received the ball from Bellerin, but was leaning back as he struck the ball.

Arsenal dominated the early possession in the second half. However, it was Southampton who offered the first threat on goal, as Nathan Redmond’s long-range effort was straight at Cech.

At the other end of the pitch, Ramsey fired wide of Forster’s far post from just outside Southampton penalty box. The home side came close to doubling their lead on 62 minutes.

Defensive midfielder Oriel Romeu picked up the ball a long way out and smashed a powerful effort that beat Cech, only to hit the bar. On 66 minutes, Southampton full-back Ryan Bertrand found himself in on goal. The England international chipped the ball over the outcoming Cech, but also past the far post.

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal curled an effort just wide of Forster’s near post from 20 yards out. The game then went from end to end without many clear-cut chances until the 83rd minute.

Sanchez curled a long-range free-kick towards goal, but Forster produced a fine save to parry the effort out for the corner kick.

With just two minutes left on the clock, the visitors equalised. Sanchez produced a superb cross into the area and substitute Olivier Giroud rose superbly guide a header past Forster.

Ramsey attempted to flick an effort past Forster in stoppage-time, but the ball trickled into the hands of the Southampton goalkeeper. The flick was the last effort and the Gunners have Giroud to thank for rescuing a point late on.

Did Arsenal deserve more than a draw at Southampton?
