According to reports from Spanish media outlet Sport, Premier League side Arsenal look set to appoint former Barcelona director of football Raul Sanllehi who’s been with the Catalan club since 2002.
A close friend of Ivan Gazidis’ will move into the Gunners boardroom to take over some of the responsibilities left unattended after Dick Law’s departure from the North London club.
Sanllehi is expected to be heavily involved in Arsenal’s recruitment strategy given his background as one of Barcelona’s chief negotiators in the past couple of years.
Sanllehi is said to have strong South American connections and is credited with being a key presence in the deal that involved nor PSG star Neymar move to Camp Nou in 2013. Neymar’s departure is believed to be one of the key reasons why Sanllehi has decided to quit Barcelona, although he is leaving the Catalan giants on good terms with the board.
The 48-year-old submitted his resignation this summer but his departure is yet to be formalized.
Raul Sanllehi is expected to officially leave his post on 1 December which means he’ll have plenty of time to get accustomed to his new surroundings in time for the January transfer window.
The latest reports pour cold water on most recent reports linking former Gunner Marc Overmars with a return to Arsenal.
Currently a director of football at Ajax, Overmars has been in that role since 2012 and it appears he will continue to do his job after denying himself that he would be rejoining Arsenal.
